MIDDLETON YARDS.
* CLOSING DOWN AT MIDNIGHT. Very little rolling stock will remain in the Middleton railway marshalling yards after 12 o'clock to-night, when they will be closed down for four months. Some of the sidings will be utilised for accommodating meat waggons, very few of which are required at this time of year. About 20 casual employees will be rendered idle by the transfer of marshalling to the Christchurch yard, the change having been decided upon as an economy measure. Although the exact cost of the yards is not known, _ it has been stated as being as high as £250.000. Mr M. Dennehy, Assistant General Manager, who has been attending a sitting of the Railway Appeal Board in Christchurch, will stay here over the week-end.
