MAORI FARMERS.
SETTLEMENT SCHEMES. [THE PBESS Special' Service.] WELLINGTON, September 5. Proposals are to go before Cabinet at an early date for Maori settlement schemes in the Manawatu, near Foxton, Bay of Plenty, and Tanranga districts. This information was conveyed fco the House of Eepresentatives to-day by the Minister for Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata, during the discussion of the Native Department's estimates. The Minister referred to the work being undertaken at the 24 settlement schemes now in operation, and he said he was particularly interested in the psychological aspect of the work among the Maoris, being content to leave the business end to experts in the Department. * Sir Apirana said there was a new conception of the Maori settlement scheme, thus being that the native should carry, out his own developmental work, although the Department would assist with grants . for seeds, wiring, and stock. The Department was doing its best to improve the class of stock, and particular attention was being directed to this aspect of Maori farming. This year there was £57,000 on the Estimates for this work generally, and by other arrangements it was hoped to make another £20,000 available on the Supplementary Estimates.
