PERSONAL. (tfi'ECIAL TO THE PRESS.) GREYMOUTH, August 31. Mrs 11. Walton (Christehurch) is visiting Greymouth. Mr and Mrs W. Cochrane left yesterday on a visit to Te Kuiti. At a meeting of. the Ivumara Racing Club, Mr W. Martyn, who is leaving Kumara to live in Greymo'uth, was presented with a cheque. . Driver in Trouble. At the Magistrate's Court, Frank John Caljaglian, aged 24 years, a seaman, was charged with having been in charge of a motor-car, whilst in a stato 01 intoxication. Ho pleaded not guilty. Evidenco was given that while driving in~ Mawhera quay the car, driven by defendant, had collided with another car, causing damago assessed at 10s. Defendant was convicted and fined £5, or, in default, ten days' imprisonment. Ilis license was cancelled for three months. Music Examinations. The following Greymouth candidates wero successful in Trinity College of Music theoretical 'examinations, held in June:— • Higher Local—Zita Munson. Intermediate Division —Honours; Edna Rohloff, Jean Byrne, Vuy Moore, Collin Rouse, Nancy Harrie, Ellen Green. Pass: Doreen Donovan. Rugby Football. Yesterday's fixtures of the West Coast Rugby Union resulted as follows: —Star Senior beat Brunner, 20 to 14. Blaketown beat Rival. 11 to 3. United drew with Excelsior, at Hokitika —3 all. Bunt scored for United, and Martyn for Excelsior. Freitas, playing for Excelsior, was injured during the play, and was removed to the Westlandr Hospital. A junior seven-a-side tourney was held at Ross. In the final, Excelsior (Hokitika) beat Ross 6 to 0. Nino teams competed. League Football. Owing to heavy showers of rain this afternoon the West Coast Rugby League fixtures at Wingham Park were postponed. Yesterday tho visiting Jjinwood school team beat Marist. 15 to 0, the scorers being McDonald (four tries) and Gallop (one). Combined West Coast Schools beat Riccarton 24 to 3, the scorers for Coast being Bowcott (three tries), Casey (two), and Kiely (one). Tries were converted by Buckman (two) and Kiely (one). Soccer. Yesterday's medal fixtures by tho Westland Associatior resulted: Dobson 8, Greymouth 0. Rewanui 2, Cobden 1. Tar-Sealing. The Grey County Engineer (Mr John Higgins) has received advice that tho Main Highways Board has agreed to the payment of a subsidy of £3 for £1 towards the cost, .of sealing the following sections of main highway within the Grey County:—(l) Greymouth to Paroa, 251 chains; (2) Greymouth to Brunner, 220 chains; (3) Greymouth to Runanga, 321 chains. The Board's decision has been made in accordance with the principle of paying a £3 for £1 subsidy towards the cost of sealing or paving main highways radiating from centres of population of more than 6000 inhabitants. In connexion with tho current year's estimates, the sum of £IOOO is being provided for work between Greymouth and Paroa. Reefton Hospital. The Reefton. Hospital Board met when Mr J. B. Auld v presided. Tho Department of Health wrote that provision was being made on the supplementary estimates to enable a subsidy on Waiuta contributions to be paid as before, at the rate of £ for £, to a maximum of £450. The secretary stated that no subsidy had been paid fo'r four months. The chairman said that the matron at Waiuta said that she would endeavour to do with one help. only. Slie pointed out tho largo numbor of attendances necessary, and said that these were in-

creasing. Members of the Board generally expressed the opinion that too many cases were taken to the Nurses' Home, and said that many of these could be attended to in their own homes. The chairman said that the "Waiuta Nurses' Home had gone behind £75 this month, without the subsidy. The Waiuta Medical Association must bo told that they would have to finance the hospital.

HOKITIKA NOTES. (PEESS ASSOCIATION TZLME AM.). HOKITIKA, August . 30. The authorities recently made a seizure of opossum skins in Otago said to be sent from West land unstamped in the originating locality. This method of handling the skins is quite illegal and it is likely that more will be heard of the matter. The Main Highways Board is limiting wages on which subsidy is to be paid for work on the highways to the rate paid by the Public. Works Department, irrespective of what the local body rate may be. The Public Works Department's rate is 14s per day. In this district the local bodies rate is 15s. The State Forest Service has installed a plant at Diggers Sawmill, Woodstock, for research work in connexion with sawn timber production, more especially the question of determining the quantity of unavoidable waste resulting from sawmill operations. Mr Dixon, of Head Office, is in charge of the investigation, which will take about two months to complete. •. Similar' .tests are being also undertaken at' other sawmills in Westland. The research, which will also cover the North Island, is of special significance to the wood pulping industry, or any other method of converting the present economic loss into a payable commercial product. At All Saints' Church last evening, Archdeacon Julius, assisted by Revs. A. K. Warren,.of Ross, and Mouhtford, of Kumara, inducted the Rev. H. J. W. Knights as vicar of Hokitika parochal district. There was a large attendance of the parishioners .and their friends. The Archdeacon's address dealt with . tho tragedy of the misuse of human lives. He emphasised the point, too often forgotten, that ministers of religion should be known and treated as friends to be consulted whenever doubts and difficulties occurred. A welcome was extended to the new vicar, Mrs Knights, and the Misses Knights, in the church hall after the service. The

speakers were Archdeacon Julius, Eevs. Hayward, Knowles, Smith, Warren, and Mountford, Messrs Ward, P. Chesterman, and Coulson. At a meeting of the Hokitika High School Board, owing to the continued illness of the secretary (Mr A. B. King) Mr T. W. Bruce was appointed acting secretary. The chairman of the Board Mr J. A. Murdoch presented a report on the position, funds, and revenues which was received with appreciation by members. It was decided to have the grounds at the hostel improved and to confer with the Hokitika School Committee regarding progress of commercial classes. At a meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board the balance-sheet was returned from the Audit Department duly certified and signed. It was reported that a good straight channel with a depth of 10 to 12 feet existed. Urgent repairs to the north protection wall were authorised. The town of Kumara is now being reticulated by the Westland Power Company preparatory to the introduction of electric light and power. The West Coast golf tournament concluded to-day in good weather. Much interest was evinced in the finals. The men's championship was won by Sime, of Westport, beating Park by. 7 and 6. The final for the ladies' championship resulted in favour of Miss Moore, of Hokitika, who defeated Mrs Slee, of Westport, by 6 and 5. The ladies' bogey was won by Miss P. Wilson with 1 down. The men's flag match was won by G. Adamßon. In the foursome Mr and Mrs Cox and Mr and Mrs Cooke tied with 94 net.
