WOMEN POLICE.
QUESTION OF CONTINUATION. PROBLEM UNDER REVIEW. (TJHITEB PEK6S ASSOCIATION—-BY EMCTEIO TBUSOBAPH—COPYBIOHT.I (Received August 31st, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. Whether the women police of London should be increased or reduced, is at present there are 300 police-women in view. Miss Dorothy Peto, formerly director of Liverpool Women Police patrols, an unofficial body, has devoted two months at the instance of the Home Office, to investigating the problem. At present there are 300 police-women in London, but the movement has in no wise the unanimous support of the judicial, police, or public authorities. It is contended that women are not suitable, on the grounds that they should not be required to perform duties involving physical force. It is also contended that women prisoners are more likely to tell the truth to men than to women. The problem of women police in London is likely to be settled by Miss Peto's report, which the "Daily Telegraph" to-day forecasts will strongly favour increasing the number, despite all objections.
