meeting of council. COMMERCIAL EXAMINATIONS.

The monthly meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held last evoning. Those present were: Messrs C. H. Hewlett (in the chair), A. O. Wilkinson, J. G. Herdman, P. Davidson, J. W. Graham, H. Chapman, J. Anderson, jun., W. H. Nicholson, A. G.' Cannons, E. W. Reod, F. J. Shanks, T. N. Gibbs, W. Bottrell, E. H. Webb, C. J. Donaldson, W. R. Carey, V.' E. Hamilton, A. M. Burns, L. G. K. Steven, A. C. Bretherton, F. E. Jones, J Mac Gibbon, If. W. Hobbs, A. I'. Wright, and E. H. Wyles. , The financial statement revealed a credit balance as at tfay 31st of £-31 8s 9d, and at June oOth of £3 Is Id. Tho Economics Committee reported: Members of the Economics Committee were the guests of the Manufacturers Association on a tour of inspection, when the factories of Messrs Duckworth, Turner, and Co., Ltd., and Aulsebrook and Co., Ltd., of Christchurch, were visited. Members of the committee enjoyed a profitable and instructive afternoon, and a similar tour of other factories, will probably be arranged at a convenient date in the near future. The Chamber's appreciation of the hospitality extended by tho Manufacturers Association and by tho proprietors and management of the factories visited has already been communicated by letter over the signature of our president. The report was adopted. _ Tho Commercial Examination Committee reported:— The committee recommends to the Council that as the question of commercial examinations is one that is likely to bo discussed at the forthcoming conference of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce ot New Zealand in October, the committee be authorised to prepare a remit and report m connexion therewith for the guidance of tho Chamber's delegates, emphasisine tho advantages of a Dominion-wide scheme with one standard throughout the whole of Now Zealand under the auspices of tho Associated Chambers, and the growing necessity for more attention to bo given to the subject of commercial handwriting by educational institutions of every kind. Tho report was adopted. The Chief Postmaster, Christchurch, forwarded particulars of an air mail service inaugurated on July Ist. It was agreed to thank the Chief Postmaster for tho information given.

Land Settlement. The Now Zealand Land Settlement and Development League forwarded a booklet covering some aspeets of the League's work. "Doubtless you are aware that for some years wo have been endeavouring to rouse public interest to the importance of utilising our natural resources," stated the letter, "and it seems as though the present is the psychological moment for a Do-minion-wido movement to this end. The support of Chambers of Commerce and similar organisations liad been secured.

The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce advised that it had boen decided to organise a New Zealand Industries Week in that town from Soptember Ist to Cth. This action had been taken with an earnest desire to stimulate the manufacture of New Zealand-made goods, which, it was held, would materially assist to solve, the unemployment problem. A comprehensive shopping display and monster procession were being arranged, and it was hopod that every trad© would be represented. The Canterbury Chamber was asked to bring the matter before its members, so that those willing to participate would make the necessary arrangements. It was decided to write to the Invercargill Chamber, wishing it success with its undertaking.

The following new members wero unanimously elected: —Messrs C. E. Boon, Ltd., bakers (Mr C. E. Boon); Davis Gelatine (N.Z.), Ltd. (Mr C. C. Davis); Mr W. A. Poison, house decorator: Messrs Fred Sladen and Sous, Ltd., importing jewellers (Mr Sladen); Dr. John Stevenson, opkthalsurgeon; Mr Williamson, builder and contractor. The following were appointed a Nominations Committee: —Messrs Norton Francis (president), H. S. E. Turner (vice-president), F. E. Jones, J. G. Herdman, P. Davidson, E. 11. Wyles, V. E. Hamilton, and T. N. Gibbs. The House Committee was authorised to make the arrangements for the annual meeting and dinner.
