HORTICULTURE.
CANTERBURY SOCIETY. A special general meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was held last evening, Mr 0. W. B. Anderson presiding. There was a large attendance of members. His Exoellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, wrote stating his willingness to act as patron of the Society. Jiis letter stated that he was deeply interested in horticultural matters. An amended draft of the Society s rules was adopted. It was decided to take steps to have the Society registered under the Incorporated Societies Act. The annual general meeting was held at the conclieion of the special meeting. In moving the adoption oi the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman expressed the wish that the exxnety would progress in tho ensuing year with as much success as had been met with in the past. The Society gave considerable benefits to its members, it was proposed to hold shows during the next year and competitive exhibits at fortnightly meetings. Thus it was hoped to create a greater interest in dowers not usually shown at the ordinary exhibitions. A trophy given by Air Guy Wilson would be available for competition in daffodil classes at tne next show. Mr Anderson thanked members of the committee for the work they had carried out during the year. The financial position was not as satisfactory as could have been wished for, but a careful supervision over expenditure had met with success. The election of officers resulted aS follows: —Patron, his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe; piesident, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; vice-presidents, re-elected: auditor, Mr E J. Woolf; treasurer, Mr G Shellerup; hon. botanist, Mr R M. Laing; hon. secretary, Mr H. L. Darton; committee, Dr. T. F. Telfold, Messrs C. Rides. W. S. Young, W. J. Humrp, A T. Penrose. M J. Gilpin, H. Cropp, C. Marks, 0. W. B. Anderson, W. Balcb. L B Hart. P J. Shanks. M. J. Barnett, R. Christen sen, and E E. Wiltshire. A collection taken up at the meeting to defray the expenses of providing refreshments at the Society s shows amounted to £2 16a.
