SIX MONTHS' FIGURES. A decline of over £0 per cent in the value of building construction authorised by the Kicearton Borough Council has taken place la the first six mouths of this year, as compared with the Ceriod from January Ist to June 80th i 1029. The following are the figures for the two periods under comparison:— 1829. Recently an English «hn on the property of Mr H O'Beirne at Wakapuaka, formerly owned by Mr A. 8. Collins, a pioneer of the district, was felled. A portion of the tree was converted into a sledge. The Mayor ot Nelson (Mr W. J. Moffatt), who is an authority on timber, says a» exchange, happened to notice some of the sawn pieces, and was greatly struck with its beautiful grain. The tree must have been planted about 80 years ago. When this class of timber was used for eoachbuildmg, etc.. it was worth a shilling a foot. At the instance of the Mayor, Mr O'Beirne has given slabs of the timber to the Cawtnron Institute and to the Forestry Deportment. LAITZO. B>MSON WAS STRONG.
