ATHLETICS.

notes and comments.

[By Relax.]

'Just at present there is very little activity in athletics, except that runners are training in preparation for Easter meetings. The list of fixtures below shows that there is plenty of running in store for the last of the Beason, but there are no meetings for the present. The Easter fixtures offer a good range of events, Kaiapoi havinc from the 100 yds, to one mile, with •women's races, field events, and cycling , also. Another good programme is that of Waimate, -where two hurdle races 120 yds and 440 yds, hjive been included' There are also the usual open events" The biggest programme is at Waikari' where every distance from 100 yds to a mile, a mile scratch race, and an 880 yds inter-club relay is listed. There are also events for women. This meeting should prove one of the best of the season. * * * The Kirwee and Hinds meetings are get down for Saturday week. Good eu- , tries have already been received, and a crowd is expected at each centre. * * * The 'Varsity Club i s eager to meet C.A.A.C. over a series of events, and April 12th has, been suggested as . a suitable date. This should be an attractive meeting, and will give members of both clubs a chance for a workout before Easter. The 'Varsity team will leave for Auckland on April 16th and the more racing the members get before then the better will be their chances of winning the inter-Univer-sity sports at Auckland on Easter Monday.

E. A. Eose is reported to be suffering from a strain in the leg which he received at Wanganui in the three-mile championship, and at Carterton last week was beaten in a mile handicap in 4min 30 2-ssec. • He was incapable of producing his usual finish, and was beaten up the straight by five yards. It is possible that Rose will be in the South Island for a time at the beginning of next season, when he may appear in several centres;

D. McLennan, accompanied by his trainer, C. M. Waldon, . left Christchurch em Sunday night, .for. the Bluff on his way to Melbourne to compete in the world's professional sprint championship. McLennan will have nine days in Melbourne beforo the first events on April sth, but he expects to be running at top form by then. Certainly he will have had time to reach form by the following Saturday, when the second half of the programme will be .run. It is expected that the Christehurch sprinter will do very well for himself, and he is bound to be close to the winners in most events. It will not be surprising if he is among the first three when .the final points are; •Dotted.

In connexion with . the tournament trials for ". the 'Varsity team, several 226yds, one mile, 440 yds hurdles, high jump, and throwing the hammer—will be, decided at Lancaster Park on, Wednesday next, at 5.15 p.m. The main' programme is to be run at the Christ's College grounds on April «th. . * * | Fixtures, ilarch 29th—Inter-borough Sports, Sumner v. NORTH CANTERBURY CENTRE. The monthly meeting of delegate#, of the ' Korth Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union was held tost •vening, Mr W. J. Walter presiding. With reference to this year's OaxnaruChristchurch cycle race, the chairman - reported that arrangements were well in band. He had met officials of the Caledonian Society at Oamaru, who had agreed to find 150 towards the prize money. W aimato had also promised to assist in collecting fox the iunds, though personally he was of - the opinion that the race should.not go through tni« township.
