Charged with having given a false name and address to Senior-Sergeant Martin, who waß executing a search warrant for liquor on the premises of Gideon Scott, 121 Peter street, Ashburton, on March 25th, Cecil Atkins Payne, a labourer, aged 54 vears, appeared before Mr R. Galbraith, J.P., at the Police Court yesterday morning. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin in asking for a remand till Friday stated that the accused was found oa Scott's premises with several others. The remand was granted. Acclimatisation Society. At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society, Mr W. H. Robinson (chairman) presided. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £153 10s.

It was decided to apply to the Department of Internal Affairs for an open season for opossums in the district at the head of the Rakaia river.

Mr E. B. Newton was appointed to represent the Society at the Deer Conference to be held in Christchurch on May 7th. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote stating that the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society had written asking that its ranger be given p.ower to act in the Ashburton Society's district. It was resolved to communicate with the South Canterbury Society, hefore replying. Allenton Sports Club. A general meeting of members of the Allenton Sports Club was held to receive reports from stallholders in connexion with the carnival to be held in May. Mr E. C. Bathurst (president) presided. All the stall organisers reported excellent progress, and that the sum of £22 9s Id had already been handed in, while there was a further sum of between £ls and £2O in the hands of members. ■ Dental Clinic. At a meeting of the Ashburton Dental Clinic committer there were present: Messrs. J. H. Harper (Tinwald), in the chair, E. M. Gabites (Borough), W. S. Kerr (Ashburton East), and C. Maynard (Allenton). The Nurse's report for February stated that the attendances at the clinic had been 137. The total number of operations was 300, new patientß treated 41, and patients re-examined 14. Croquet. A challenge for the Gala Cup was staved off by Ashburton yesterday, when they played a match against the Allenton Club, on their own greens, and' won by six games to three.
