FOREST PESTS.

ATTEMPT AT CONTROL. In an attempt to control insect and fungus pests of New Zealand's native j and exotic forests, a special committee has been appointed by the Department of Scientific and. Industrial Research to prosecute research. The headquarters of the committee are at the Forest Biological Research Station, at the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and Dr. Miller, the Institute's Entomologist, is in charge of the work. The committee held a meeting in Nelson on Wednesday, which was presided over by Mr C. E. Foweraker, representing the Council of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Dr. T. E. Easterfield, and representatives of the Timber-growers' and Sawmillers'" Association and. the State Forest Service were also present, as the different bodies interested in forestry are helping to finance the work. The establishment of the station was ■discussed, along with the best method of carrying out the research. The new building adjacent to the Institute's Entomological station in Nelson is nearly ready. In order to glean all the knowledge he can, Dr. Miller will tour America and Europe. The station will be administered by Mr A. F. Clark, formerly of the Canterbury College School of \ Forestry, during Dr. Miller's absence.
