UNEMPLOYMENT.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,— Having for many years read your much respected paper, also many letters on employment and otherwise, I should like to make a few remarks in answer to "Breadwinners First.'' Young girls or women going into homes for domestic service are very hardly treated, to my way of thinking. The head of is always clamouring for short hours, holidays, and big pay; while the maid of all work is expected to be the first on duty in the morning, kept going all day with work and" children, and the last to finish up at night, with possibly a child or two in her room at 11 work all day long like this for a number of years, takes a great deal of brightness out of their lives, which makes one old before her time, and takes a lone time to thiow off To work like this in the homes of other people where there is no one they love and to feel all the while that they are exacting all thev can of her, is against human nature. - I have much svmpnthv for mothers; theirs is often a hard life, but the same sympathy is due to the maid of all work.—Yours, etc ' A WOMAN. ' February 12th, 1930. TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. gj r May I say I would like to thank "Once a Clerk" and "Breadwinner" for their splendid letters in your paper. Being the mother of sons, two vainly attempting to procure billets, I realise that if the girls would step aside the boys would have a chance, instead of the endless waiting, -which to a bright and energetic boy is most depressing. At a political meeting during the last elections I asked if something could not be done about the matter, but was told that nothing could, as girls got lower wages. When one has scraped and saved to .give the boys a good education to fit them for the march through life well—is it worth it?— Yours, etc., ' MOTHEE OP SONS. I February 13 th, 1930.
