COUNTY COUNCIL.

MOUNT HERBERT. The monthly meeting of the Mount ■Herbert County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Pur&u. Present: Messrs E. \V. uray (chairman), J. A. Geilety, A. ±i. liardiner, E, W. Coop, H. it. Uardiuer, Unas. Pope, and Keg. UeDbie. The chairman reported that ne and members of the council waited on the Main Higuways .Board to urge the Board to open up a tourists' road on the Peninsula, via i>yer a Pass road, Governor's Bay, Teddington, Ciiarteris iJay, i'urau, and .Port Levy, thence to the Hilltop and Akaroa. Nothing definite was concluded. • The Council considers this route to be an excellent one as a tourist route, as beautiful views are obtained all the way along, and from the Mount Herbert Peak, 3014 ft above sea-level, the highest on the Peninsula, 6plondid views may be obtained of the numerous bays surrounding the Peninsula. The Council set up a sub-committee to confer with the Lyttelton Borough Council with the object of enlisting their co-opera-tion in this matter. Messrs E. W. Gray, J. A. Geilety, E. W. Coop, and Alex H. Gardiner were appointed. Owing to not yet receiving » reply from the Loans Board for the Purau-Port Levy road, improvement, the matter was left m abeyance until a reply should be received. Owing to the present unsatisfactory manner in which the dog registration is carried out. the Council decided to appoint suitable persons at various parts of ■ the district, and to inflict a penalty on those who did not register by the end of April. The Council voted a contribution of £5 to the. Port and City League. The financial statement showed a debit balance at the bank amounting to £1933 ss. Accounts amounting to £175 3s 5d were passed for payment.
