FIRES.
♦ HOUSE GUTTED. A five-roomed dwelling in Sea View road, New Brighton, owned and occupied by Mr and Mrs J. Hayes, was gutted by fire. The Brigade • were quickly on the scene and prevented the fire from spreading to the adjoining premises. The fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread to the other rooms. Mrs Hayes escaped in her night attire. The house was insured in the Northern Office for £SOO, and the furniture for £IOO. A BIG LOSS. (FBKSt IMOCIATXOX TMJtOBUt.) DANNEVIBKE, September 3. The Kiritaki co-operative cheese factory; was destroyed by fire early last evening. The fire is presumed to have been caused by a spark from boiler ashes. A gale was blowing at the time, the manager's house only being saved. The output was just over 1300 tons of cheese annually. About 100 crates of cheese were destroyed. The insurance was £5260 on the factory, curing-room, plant, stock, etc., in the Norwich Union Office, and £4OO on the butter plant in the South British Office. PRINTING OFFICE DESTROYED. (pEBSa ASSOCIATION TBLBOK/UI.) NEW PLYMOUTH, September 3. A fire at 4 a.m. to-day destroyed the "Waitara Evening Mail" building and Chadwick's confectionery shop. Incendiarism is suspected. Two kerosene tins, recently emptied, were found near the building. Two hundred feet of hoso, which is kept on a reel, was discovered three-quaiters of a mile The insurance on Chadwick's building is £6OO. A pianola, a soda fountain and stock are insured for £595. The stock of the "Mail" v;as insured for £4OO, and the building for £2OO. LAUNCH DAMAGED. (SPBCI4X TO THB PB.SM.) TIMARU, September 3. An outbreak of fire at 10 o'clock to-night was responsible for slight damage to the Helen Lassie, a 30ft fishing launch belonging to the Timaru trawling fleet, and owned by Mr T. E. McPherson, which was berthed at the end of the Marine Parade. As a result of the fire Mr James Roddick suffered burns on the arms and hands, necessitating me'dical attention, but his injuries are not serious. Messrs McPherson and Roddick were engaged in starting the engine, a small electne motor being used for the purpose. A short circuit occurred, causing an outbreak of fire. The Timaru Fire Brigade were promptly on the scene and soon had the outbreak extinguished. The full extent of the damage was not known to-night, but the owner is of the opinion that it was not of a serious nature. The launch is insured for £2OO in the United offiea.
