COMPETITIONS.

ASHBURTON SOCIETY. Principal interest in the conclusion of the Ashburton Competition Society's fifth annual festival last evening was taken in the pianoforte championship for the Tucker trophy, which was awarded to Miss Marjorie Alexander, of Christchurch, who defeated the holder. Miss Louise Tonkin, of Oamaru, by four points. The win was popularly received. During the evening the president, Mr R. J. Thompson, thanked the judges for the courteous and helpful way in which they had carried out their duties. The fact that Messrs J. I'. Montague (Auckland) and W. Hutchena (Wanganui) had been requested to judge two years in succession showed the confidence reposed in them. He hoped to see Mr D. H. Both well (Masterton) return next year.
