* PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE PBESS.) GREYMOUTH, August 6. Mr D. J. Evans (Hokitika) left today for Christchurch, to superintend the setting up of the Westland exhibits at the Christchurch Winter Show. Mr H.. E. Holland, M.P., arrived this morning from Westport, and joined the express at Stillwater for Christchurch, en route for Wellington. Mr E. J. Frost, who has been visiting Greymouth, left to-day on his return to Sydney. Mr E. B. Pownall has resigned his position on the commercial staff of the "Argus," and returned to-day to Wanganui. Mr J Spiers Robertson left this morning for Christchurch, owing to the death of his father, Mr J. Robertson, of St. Albans. The late Mr Robert son was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and was 79 years of age. He resided on the West Coast for 36 years, before leaving for Christchurch nine years ago. Mr and Mrs C. Hickman, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned this evening to Greymouth. Mr J. W. Arnold, Christchurch manager of the Mercantile and General Insurance Co., Ltd., arrived this afternoon. Mr J. D. Lynch, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to-day. Messrs Mitchell (secretary of the Central Earthquake Committee) and Innes (Government Audit Department), who have been visiting Westport and Karamea, left yesterday for Reefton and Greymouth. They were met this evening by the Grey Relief Committee. Mr F. V. Dennehy, who has been transferred to the railway offices at Burke's, was last evening tendered a social by the United Club, of which he was secretary, and presented with a travelling rug. Mr C. V. Curtis, of the Public Works Office, Stratford, has been transferred to Greymouth to the position of chief clerw, just vacated by Mr C. A. Turner. Wedding. The wedding took place this morning at St. Patrick's Church, Greymouth, of James Walker, son of Mrs and the late Mr J. Walker, of Plymouth, Devon, to Amelia, third daughter of Mr and the late Mrs H. Ruane, of Dobson. The Rev. Father Holahan officiated. The bride wore a frock of beige georgette with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of freesias and maidenhair fern. The bridesmaid, Miss W. Hudd, niece of the bride, wore a green mousseline dress with green crinoline hat. Her bouquet was of hothouse flowers. Mr Cliff Winpenny was best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride's sister, Mrs G. Hudd. Mr and Mrs Walker left later for the North Island. Grey Technical School. Nominations for the three positions on the Greymouth Technical High School Board of Governors, vacated through effluxion of time by Mrs C. H. Rose anfl Messrs W. Blair and W. T. Kyle, closed to-day. Mrs L. R. Shuttleworth, Messrs W. T. Kyle and W. Blair were elected unopposed. State Mines. The State Mines at Rapahoe and Rewanui are working steadily. Fifty-one pair of miners went into the quarterly cavil last week, and six additional miners have been engaged. Inquest. An inquest into the death of Gilbert Louden, a tiiflber worker, who suffered fatal injuries on Friday evening when a waggon of logs -apsized about two miles from Watson's mill, at Dillmanstown, was held yesterday afternoon at Kumara, before the District Coroner, Mr W. Meldrum. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death by the

% accidental capsizing of a truck laden with logs, the truck running over the wooden tramlines, and the accident being, in a great measure, due to the faulty cap rail of the tramway. The Coroner added a rider that in his opinion a more rigid inspection of tramways would prevent accidents of this nature. Obituary. The death took place at the Grey Hospitla last night of Gordon William Thomas Ferguson, son of Mr and Mrs W. Ferguson, of Greymouth. Deceased, who was 19 years of age, recently underwent a severe operation, from which he failed to recover. Young Ferguson, who was a keen athlete and rifleman, won the Hutchison shield for swimming, and the Lady Godley Cup for shooting. He was a prominent member of the United Football Club. Veteran Fireman's Funeral. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Clarke, formerly Superintendent of the Greymouth Fire Brigade, took place this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery, the large cortege including members of the Greymouth Fire Brigade, and of various lodges with which the late Mr Clarke was connected. The coffin was carried on the Fire Brigade motor engine. The Rev. Mr Cocks, of Kumara, officiated at the house and at the graveside, where the Masonic service was also read. School Committee. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika School Committee was held last evening, Mr A. C. Armstrong presiding. The dental officer reported 80 at tendances during the month, with 173 operations. The caretaker reported on requirements for the clinic. It was pointed r out that the Committee had no revenue for conducting the clinic, and it tvas resolved that the Health Department be approached for a grant towards procuring the requisites mentioned. The Rector's report showed a decline in attendance owing to the influenza epidemic. Time Lost at Dobson. The morning shift failed to put in an appearance at the Grey Valley Collieries at Dobson yesterday. Some time ago an arrangement was made between the mine officials and men by which work commenced an hour earlier than the ordinary time on the back Friday in order that the men coming off shift could be free earlier in the evening. It is stated that owing to some of the men leaving before time considerable loss to the mine had resulted through the reduced coal output. On Friday night an official dismissed the men when the shift was only half worked. As a protest against this action, the men decided to take the day off, thus rendering the mine idle for the shift. Rural Mail. An endeavour is being made by the postal authorities to have the delivery of correspondence to Three Mile, Arahura, Humphreys, and Hoho residents placed on a better footing by providing them with a rural delivery. It is proposed to start the delivery from Hokitika immediately upon arrival of the early train from Greymouth on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Hokitika Library. The Hokitika Library Committee met last evening, Mr D. J. Evans presiding. Gifts were received as follows: Maori stone adze, Mr R.
