THE WINTER SHOW.

PREPARATIONS WELL IN HAND. For the opening of the Winter Show and Exhibition on Saturday night, an effort is being made to induce the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) to visit Christchurch and perform the ceremony of declaring the show open. One of the departments of the show which has grown in popularity is that devoted to art handicraft, including almost every conceivable kind of fancy work. Additional classes have been added for this year's show, and a foretaste of the pleasure in store for those interested was given yesterday at the Canterbury A. and P. Association's rooms, where the exhibits were being received. In variety and number and workmanship the display indicated that this department will be one of the attractions of this year's show. To-day the King Edward Barracks will be handed over to exhibitors, who will begin to get their stalls in position. Yesterday workmen were busy pegging out the sites of the various stalls in preparation for the army of carpenters who will soon be in possession. The annexe, 550 ft by 37ft, is larger than any annexe previously erected. In it will be housed all the district bays and most of the remainder of the primary exhibits, as well as the side-shows. The district bays are 30 large—they are small exhibitions in themselves—that it was found difficult to display them in the main building without interference from the big girders that supoort the roof. For that reason, they have been transferred to the annexe, where it will be possible to displav them without anything impeding the view. The whole of the barracks proper will be taken up with the secondary .industry displays. The exhibits this year will be 95 per cent. New Zealand, and will constitute the most comprehensive collection ever gathered together in Christchurch The annexe has been made wider this year. Besides giving greater space, this has the effect of carrying the outer wall past the crown of the road. In past vears a good deal of trouble was caused in wet weather by the rain from the road flowing into the annexe By carrying the wall out past the crown of the road, the executive hope to avoid that trouble this year.

A start was made yesterday with the putting down of the flooring for 'he exhibits in the annexe. A large amount of work will have to be done before the goods can be displayed, but it is anticipated that from to-day an army of workmen will be engaged. The side-shon*s will be more varied in character than has been the case at previous shows Most of the warm favourites, such as the merry-go-round, etc., will be found again, and there will be a number of novelties.
