MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs L. Maginness (Huntingdon), Mrs E, Holland (Tinwald), and Mr S. Holland (Tinwald) were passengers by the express yesterday to connect with the Tofua on a trip to the Fiji Islands. Miss I. Munro, Matron of the Malvern Hospital, left yesterday on a three months' visit to Fiji, Euchre Tournament. A euchre tournament played between teams from the St. Stephen's Men's Club and the Hakatere Lodge on Tuesday evening resulted in a win for the former by 77 points. Boy Injured. A broken nose, a broken left arm, and a severe scalp wound were suffered by William Inwood, the five-year-old son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Inwood, of 93 Kermode street, yesterday afternoon, when he ran into a passing car driven by Miss Z. Bonnington. The boy, who had just left t_e .oorough School, came on to the road and, noticing his mother on the opposite footpath, hastily ran towards her regardless of two approaching cars. The boy was admitted to Oakhurst Private Hospital. School Committee. The committee of the Ashburton Borough School met last evening, Mr J. Watson presiding. In repl- to the committee's request that appointments be not published before the rospeetive School Committees had been notified, the Education Board wrote stating that when applications were first received for a position the Board considered them in committee. The name of the appointee was not given to the newspapers until the following meeting of the Board, when the appointment was confirmed. Nothing was given out until a committee had been consulted. Regarding the suggestion that two names be submitted the Board regretted that the present Act prevented such. If the highest graded applicant was regardod by the Senior Inspector as being capable or filling the position satisfactorily, the Board had no option in the matter. Mr T. S. J. Doherty wrote stating that a number of parents, including himself, would like to have some information regarding the trophies won at the Mid-Canterbury Schools' Association's sports. It was four months since the meeting was held, and it did not seem fair that successful trophy winners should be denied the honour and privilege of holding their respective trophies. It was evident that something was wrong with the organisation. The headmaster stated that most of the trophies had come to hand, but the miniature cups had yet to be engraved. The prize moneys were now available. The arranging of a function at whieh the prizes would be presented was left with the headmaster. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 468, while the attendance for the past week had averaged 82.5. The average for the quarter was 92.6. It waa decided that instruments required for the band should be purchased out of the hobby fund. The chairman, Mr M. Bruce, and the headmaster were appointed to attend a meeting to be held to-morrow to consider the question of a school excursion to the Christchurch Winter Show.
