HIGHFIELD POST OFFICE. The sew Post and Telegraph Office, for which authority was recently granted by the Postmaster-General, was opened for public business yesterday. The office, which is situated in Mr G. E. Paterson'a store, Wai-iti road, will fill a much-needed want in the district. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, Mr C. B. Orr Walker, S.M., presiding. Judgment was given for plaintiffs bj default in the following cases:—Timaru Borough Council v. William Hodge, £& Os od; McGruer, Da vies and Co., v. Donald Cooksley, £18; David Shepherd v. Matthew G. Jamicso*, £4O; James M. McLaren v. Matthew G. Jamieson, £26 19s 8d; John Quinn v. Matthew G. Jamieson, £22 Bs. On a judgment summons, Thomas Henderson was ordered to pay Mary Ann Veitch, £25 lis and coats forthwith, in default 30 days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 30a a month.

Robert Tweed Mclntyre (Mr G. F. Inglis) proceeded against Eobert Oliver Cedrie Marshall, carpenter, o* Fairlie (Mr A. D. Meßae) for £25 for money lent. Defendant counter-claimed for 25s ss, being wages for work carried out for Mclntyre. The defendant is the step-son of the plaintiff. Judgment was given for plaintiff on the claim, and on his counter-claim Marshall was nonsuited. Welcome to Miss Street. There was a large attendance in tho Wesley Hall last night, when the Mayor (Mr W. Angland) extended a welcome to Miss Jennie Street, lecturer for the National Sunday School Union of Great Britain, and Field Secretary of tho Christian Endeavour Society. At the conclusion of the Mayor's remarks, Miss Street gave an address on the work of the Society, which was listened to with great interest. WAIMATE. The subscription list in aid of the earthquake relief fund now amounts to £B6 Is, and with the amount collected in the Waihaorunga district, the total has reached £l4O 13s. The Waimate representative team plays the first match of the season today against the Mackenzie Sub-Union. Another representative fixtore has been arranged for August 3rd against the YVaitaki Sub-Union. The Waimate Golf Club's competitions are progressing satisfactorily. The second medal round was. won by B. R. O'Hara, with a net score of 62. In the third medal round, Chisholm and Milsom tied with a net score of 63 each. The following have qualified for the championship:—J. C. Templer, C. G. Holmes, E. W. Trarera, D. S. Chisholm, It. G. Scott, D. Borrie, It. Fowler, and T. A. Wilson. In a golf match at Oamarn to-day the Waiinnte Golf Club will be represented by Messrs J. C. Templer, R. G. Scott, R. Fowler, E. W. Travers, D. Borrie, T. A. Wilson, R. G. A. S&well, C. G. Holmes, J. So far the winter has been a very good one, and in a few more weeks danger of anything serious in the way of a fall of snow should be past. At the weekly shoot held in the Aorangi Hall on Monday, A. Dale won the silver button" and H. Welsh won a trorjhy. The subscriptions to the earthquake relief fund total £lB4 19s 6d.

PERSONAL. Major and Mrs E. S. Walpoie, ''Manington," Geraldine, left yesterday for Wellington, where they will be the guests of their Excellencies, Sir Charles and the Lady Alice Fergusson, at Government House for the races. Mr J Kennedy (Mayor of Geraldine) is in Wellington. Mr and Mrs B. Hayes, who have been spending a few days in Dunedin, have returned to Geraldine. Valedictory. A meeting of the members ot the Geraldine Tennis Club was held in Kennedy ; s rooms on Tuesday aiternoon tor the purpose of saying farewell to Dr. Douglas Paterson, who haa been an enthusiastic member of the club for a number of years, and who is leaving shortly for England, where ho intends to specialise in surgery. The president (Mr F. H. Fish) said the members of the Tennis Club were exceedingly sorry to be losing such a valuable member" as Dr. Paterson, who, at all times, had been most willing to help the club in any way. Several of the younger members were greatly indebted to him for the painstaking manner in which he had coached them at various times. On behalf of the members Mr Fish asked the guest of the afternoon to accept a solid leather attache case a3 a slight token of the respect in which he was held by his fellow members.

His association with the members of the Geraidine Tennis Club had always been > most cordial, and if his tennis experiences in England were as pleasant as they had been in Geraldine then he felt sure that there were happy times ahead. The local school has a good side this year, and an excellent game should be witnessed. TEMUKA. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Temuka District High School Committee, Mr A. E. Smith presided. The Education Board wrote stating that the appointment of Miss A. Puflett as infant mistress had been confirmed. Mr Buzan's offer of a bugle, provided an effort was made to establish a bugle band, was accepted with thanks. Mr W. Goodman, who has resigned from the position of caretaker, after 16 years' service, was presented with a razor and shaving brush, and Mrs Goodman with two pyrex dishes. Miniature Rifles. On Tuesday the Temuka Citizens' Club held its weekly shoot when a trophy valued at 30s, presented by Mr E, D. Gibb, was competed for. Six members with the aid of their handicaps secured the possible, and will shoot off next week. The shoot-off for Messrs Gapper and Sheen's trophy, was won by B. Edwards. Next week a trophy presented by Mr W. B. Boys, will be competed for. A team's match was fired between Temuka and Winchester, the latter winning by 754 points to 750. Golf. At the wind-up meeting of the ladies' committee in connexion with the recently held bazaar for school funds, it was reported that the gross takings were £6B 10s 4d. Of that £SO wa« handed to the school commitj tee, the remainder being held in the meantime to meet expenses. Votes of thanks were passed to all who by gifts and patronage had assisted; also, to the musicians in connexion with a dance held at the conclusion of the bazaar.
