COMPULSION WANTED.
SLAUGHTERING OP STOCK AT ABATTOIR.
"The attention of the Committee has been drawn to the fact that during the past month the amount received in fees from the meat export companies in respect of stock slaughtered at the freezing works has again increased," reported the Abattoir Committee to the City Council last evening, "and that if the proposed reduction in the fees chargeable in respect of such stock eventuates, the number of stock slaughtered at the freezing works may still further increase. "In view of the fact that the Council is compelled by law to establish an abattoir, the Committee is of opinion that it is only equitable that it should be compulsorv for all stork slaughtered for consumpti n in the abattoir district to be killed thereat. There is no provision in the Slaughtering and Inspection Act for thU to be enforced, and the Committee therefore recommends that the Council endeavour to obtain legislation in this direction by means of an amendment to the Act abovementioned." The report was adopted.
