EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND

Over £l2 was raised in aid of the Earthquake Relief Fund as the result of a dance held at Waihao Downs on Thursday. Over sixty couples were present. Mr W. B. Freeman, of Waimate, who left on Thursday to take up his residence in Riecarton, Christchurch, was tendered a farewell social by a large number of friends on the eve of his departure. Mr E. C. d'Auvergne presided, and in his address he mentioned that Mr Freeman had been a resident of Waimate for over fifty years. There were many expressions of regret at his comj ing departure. Mr d'Auvergne banded Mr Freemen a solid leather suit-ease for himself, and a travelling rug for Mrs Freeman. Mr Freeman briefly replied. Snnsaiae »ad Bain. According to figures oupplied by Mr F. Akhurst, the rainfall last month was exceptionally large, while the bright sunshine was the smallest amount yet recorded for a month. Adams, P.D.C.R., ""as unable to be present, and it was decided to eend his medal, together with a letter of appreciation. FOUR PEAKS. At. the weekly practice of the Four Peaks miniature rifle shoot this week the following w<»re the best scores:— H. Mottinson 79. A. Quantock 78, G. Burrows 7". S. Rose 77, N. Prattlev 74, R. WOODBURY. Very heavy frosts are being experienced, but are followed by very tine, sunny days. At the weekly practice oi the ladies' rifle club, this week, t<h» following were the best scores:—Mrs Cain 79, Mr Riches 74, Mrs Baker 72. and Miss Jefferson 70. FAIRLIE. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Mackenzie Sub-Union was held in the Aorangi Hall on Tuesday night, when Mr J. O'Connor presided. Mr Wm. Scott. of Fairlie, waited on the Committee and asked the cl'.airman to accept, on behalf of the Sub-Union, a challenge enp for competition among the junior teams or the district, and in doing so said he wished to give the cup for the encouragement of junior football and for the good of the game generally. Mr O'Connor, in accepting the" cup. thanked Mr Scott on behalf of the Union for such a valuable trophy. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Scott. It was agreed that the cup be called thf> William Scott Cup. and that it be competed for annualiv bv the junior teams in the Sub-Union". The secretary was instructed to make enquiries regarding insurance of the various trophies of the Sub-Union and to report to the next meeting.
