EAST COAST RAILWAY.

EXCURSIONISTS VIEW PROGRESS.

(PBESB ASSOCIATION WSLEGBAM.)

NAPIER, November 7.

The Bailway Department to-day ran an excursion train from Waipukurau to Tutira, 30 miles north from Napier, the farthest point it is yet possible to reach on this end of the East Coast railway. The object of the excursion was to give an opportunity to the people of Hawke's Bay to gain an understanding of the immensity of the undertaking and to see" at first hand evidence of the splendid progress being made with the construction of the line. The route, on which there are several long, stiff grades, has involved the construction of innumerable embankments, bridges, and viaducts, which gave the people much to interest them. Over nine hundred made the trip, and as a result Hawke's Bay residents in general will be more fully acquainted with the railway all are so pleased to see being pushed on with such vigour and determination by the Public Works Department. Speeches at various stopping places by officers of the Railway Department referred to the magnitude of the work, explained the engineering difficulties, and emphasised the desire of the Department to serve the ..eople and to gain their co-operation In "effectively conducting the railways generally on methods best calculated to advance the interests of the Dominion.
