PRISONERS SENTENCED.

WELLINGTON, November 5. Strong condemnation offthe action taken by the prisoner who, in the course of his trial for theft, raised an allegation that the charge against him had been concocted by the police, was made by Mr Justice Eeed when George Ashton Ferguson, aged thirty-four a clerk, appeared for sentence on. two charges of the theft of goods. L spite of the jury's recommendation for mercy, Mr Justice Eeed said Jhat he would be lacking in bis duty if he did not take the prisoner's action into consideration. He inflicted a sen. tence of reformative detention tor twelve months. Prisoner also had to pay £3O as cosfe of the prosecution, in default three months' hard labour. Thomas Houston, aged thirty-seven a Post Office supervisor, was sentenced to eighteen months' reformative ch* tention on a charge of opening a postal packet Harry Honor, aged sixty-six, was sentenced to three years' hard laboui for an iadecent assault on a female.
