ATHLETICS.

CANTERBURY COLLEGE CLUB. The annual meeting of the Canterbury College Amateur Athletic Club was held last night. Mr J. K. Moloney (vice-president) presided over a large attendance of members. The •committee reported an extremely successful season. In spite of the fact that tho club failed dismally at the Easter 'tournament, it had since then grown in numbers and keenness, and could now call itself the premier club in Canterbury. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £7 lis Bd. The tournament trials were held before Easter. Creditable performances were put up, the College record for the three miles flat being broken by E. B. E. Taylor. The trophies competed for were won as follows:—Mansell Memorial Cup, C. L. Ridgen; Fallen Comrades' Cup, E. B. E. Taylor: Field Events Cup, A. M. Watkins; Ladies' Cup, A. H. Candy; InterFaculty Cup, Arts. A small team did practically nothing at the University tournament, where the club won the wooden spoon easily. E. B. B. Taylor ran well to gain second place in the mile and first in the three miles. C. h. Kidgen was third in the 440 yds flat, and J. H. Claridge third in the 440 yds hurdles. The following club members were awarded College blues for 1927E. B. E. Taylor, C. h. Ridgen, D. W. Bain; half-blues, A. L. Haslam, J. H. Claridge, and A. H. Candy. The steeplechase was marred to some extent by bad weather and coun-ter-attractions. There were 22 starters, and C. B. Beatson won the Dougall Cup. D. W. Bain gained fastest time. Record entries were received for the spring meeting. The club was indebted to Mr A. E. Flower for the presentation of a cup for competition between Rolleston and College Houses. The club held two evening meetings during the season.

In the Canterbury .championships the club did better than it had for many years, winning the Watson Cup for the club's championship by a very large margin of points. No fewer than nine Canterbury championships fell to club members, and in very large fields all the club representatives did surprisingly well. Seven club members were chosen to represent Canterbury at the New Zealand championships, and of these M. Leadbetter was to be congratulated on retaining his title over 100 yds and 220 yds. A small presentation was made Mr A. L. Haslam beforo ho left for Oxford. He carried with him to England the best wishes of the club.
