WOOL AND THE MANUFACTURER.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE TRESS. gi r; —We are urged to support local industry, and as a trader I endeavour to do so where possible. New Zealand manufacturers, however, are losing no time to pass on to the consumer the recent rise in wool. It is reasonable to suppose that manufactured stocks vary from £IO,OOO to £50,000, yet the recent riso in wool has taken immediate effect. The retailer at this stage cannot advanco his prices and has therefore to content himself with less profit while the hungry manufacturer benefits. Even if wool prices harden (and that is by no means a certainty) it. will be six months before the English manufacturer passes this on to New Zealand. Last week's mail brought a confirmation Qf an order and a further quotation, at the old price. Surely this is food for thought for the Chamber of Commerce. —Yours, etc., MERINO. March 12th.
