LIGHTS FAILED.
TAMAHINE'S GLOOMY VOYAGE. ! [THE ritESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, April 4. Owing to the failure of her auxiliary engines when in the vicinity of the Karori rock light at 8.20 o'clock last night, the Tamahine, bound from Picton to Wellington, was suddenly plunged into total darkness. After leaving Picton -at G p.m., a good trip had been made, but as soon as the lights went out, the speed had to be reduced, and owing to a south-east swell, conditions were none too comfortable for the passengers. Temporary lights were hoisted and the hand steering gear was brought into commission. = The vessel proceeded on her way at considerably reduced speed and arrived at Wellington at twenty minutes past one this morning. The last portion of the trip was made without any of the usual deck or cabin lights, and j oil lamps stationed in various parts of the vessel had to serve the purpose.
