GAS INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING. [THE PBEBB Special Service.] WELLINGTON, February 0. The third annual meeting of the Gai Institute of New Zealand was held to">day, about fifty members attending from all parts of the Dominion. Sir Ha.-old Beauchamp, Chairman of Directors of the Wellington Gas Company, In opening the proceedings, stressed the fact that in spite of the competition of electricity, gao was more than holding its own, more, of coarse, in the direction of heating and power than as an iliuminant, tho high cost of hydro-electricity undertakings partly accounting for this. Sir Harold Beauchamp added that he thoroughly endorsed'the remarks of tho chairman of the Auckland Gas Company on the subject of unfair taxation. In his presidential address, Mr M. J. Kennedy said that the gas industry depended upon a plentiful tupply of good and suitable coal. The cost of Westport, Greymouth, and Newcastle coal (the most suitable available) had increased by leaps and bounds. The two former, in 1907 could be obtained for 15s 7d per ton. Last year the cost was 42s per ton. As coal bad increased in price- by 170 per cent, during the last twentv years, and wages by lor per cent., it spoke well for the economical working of tho gao companies that tho price of gas had been but slightly increased.
