WOOL SALE.

KEEN DEMAND FIRM AT TIMARU PRICES. CROSSBRED SELLS WELL. The third wool sale of the Christchurch scries was commenced liist evening in the Caledonian Hall, Kilmore street. Three of the six catalogues were disposed of, comprising !>3OO bales of a total of 20,051'. The sale will be resumed this morning.

The following arc the respective catalogues and the order of sale: — Bales. National Mortgage and Agencv Co., Ltd. .. .'. 202:$ N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. .. -Hi-18 H. Matson and Co. .. .. 2731! JPviie, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. .. 4!>r,o Dnlgety and Co., Ltd. .. .. U>u3 N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agencv Co., Ltd. .. .'. 1039 2(1,0,12 Condition of Wool. The wool generally was in good condition, though not up to the order of the January catalogue, which, however, was a super catalogue. Naturally with the advance of the season a good deal of the clip was heavier, and on an average it was not so bright as the preceding catalogue. However, for a February offering little fault could be found.

There was a heavier showing of coarse wool than is usual, and it is obvious that the heavy absorption of North Island Romuey and Lincoln cross sheep into Canterbury flocks, which has been going on for several years, is now making its presence felt. Over 100,000 North Island ewes came into Canterbury last year, a similar number would probably not be an over-estimate of the sheep carried over from the two preceding seasons, so that close on 200,000 additional coarse-skinned sheep are being clipped annually. Under the farming conditions prevailing this development is no doubt inevitable, but is worth noting as an influence on the character of the province's wool. On the other hand the present catalogue contains a number of Chatham Island clips of excellent quality. Breeders on the Islauds have steadily applied themselves to the importation of purebred Komney rams from tho mainland, and the result is seen in the quality of the wool now being produced. ' Widespread Demand.

The particularly keen sale at Tiuiaru prepared vendors for a brisk sale, and their anticipations were fully realised. All fine wools sold firmly at Tiniaru rates, there being very little, if any, quotable change. However, three-quar-tcrbred and crossbred were in particularly keeu request, these classes being about a penny better than at last Christchurch sale, and a shade in advance of Timaru. A good deal of three-quarter bred made from 13Jd to 15d, and crossbred, which ranged about lid at the January sale, exceeded the shilling mark on an average last night. Halfbred and Corriedale wool sold with notable uniformity, the bulk of this class ranging between 17Jd to 18Jd. Merinos sold very keenly, local mills being to tho fore in this competition, whilst, as usual, all classes of pieces sold surprisingly well compared with fleece. The Continental representatives were prominent in the competition for pieco lots. A feature of the opening catalogue was the spirited Continental competition for all classes. This element temporarily dominated tho market. However, nil buying points appeared to be in want of wool, a fact which was fairly obvious when big grouped lots were offered. In the three catalogues sold the total passings were 384 bales, or a shade over •1 per cent.
