STRUGGLE WITH MANIAC.
SPECTATORS GIVE NO AID. (FBESB ASSOCIATION TSLEOBAK.) BLENHEIM, February 9. An extraordinary fracas was witnessed in Lower High street last evening, when a crowd of about 80 men stood stupidly by and watched Mr B. Hester engaged for upwards of %0 minutes in a desperate struggle with a dangerous maniac, not one of the men offering to go to his assistance. Fortunately, Mr Hester, who has some knowledge of the science .of wrestling, was able to hold the maniac until the arrival of a constable. But once he relinquished tho "double Nelson" which he had imposed on his opponent, the maniac took new life, and the constable had a warm time in getting handcuffs on him, having to en 11 on two bystanders for assistance. Then the man was haled to tho polico station, whore he again made a. big struggle before being introduced to a cell.
As a sequel to tho affair, SeniorSergcant Clarkson intimated to tho Bench this morning that the man was still too violent to appear. A remand for eight days was granted. Medical men subsequently cortificd that the man is insane, and he wos removed to a mental hospital. Thn man was a visitor to Blenheim.
