SWIMMING.
ASHBURTON CLUB. ANNUAL CARNIVAL. An excellent evening's entertainment provided by tho Ashbnrton Amateur Swimming Club for its annual carnival was, to an extent, marred by tho rain which set in shortly after 8 p.m. Nevertheless tho officials managed excellently undor tho adverse conditions and the programme was run off without wasto of trrao or a hitch, of any description. Tho attendance was most gratifying, there being about 800 pioplo present. A number of "competitors weio prcsont from Christchurch in addition to a good representation from local clubs, and tho various events were well contested. A great deal of interest centred round tho Dobccr Cup relay race of 100 yds, which was won by East Christchurch after having boon held for the pust twelve months by tho Ashbnrton Club. Tho results aro as follows, tho number ot competitors being givsn in parentheses: 66Syds Primary Schoolboys' Handicap (O A. Bray (12aee) 1, H. Milscm (scr) 2. Tinii, GUecc. Won by two yards with a yard between second and third. 100 yds First-class Handicap—First heat (3): G. Mackie (East Ashbnrton), Usee i; D. P. Lindsav (East Christchuroh), scr 2." Time, 61scc. Second heat (4): C. Atkinson (East Christohurch), 2aeo 1; B. Lano (Ashburton) 2. Timo, Miao. Final: Lindsay 1, Atkinson 2. Time, 6tsec. At tho end of the first length Lane and Mackie had a lead of 10 yards on Lindsav, which tho latter decreased to two yards at 66 2-3 yards. Atkinson and Lindsay overhauled tho Ashb-uton men halfway over tho last length, and tho latter won by two feet. 50yds Primary Schoolgirls' Handicap (7)— T). Smith (6sec) 1, K. Koig (4sec) 2. However the latter bended big opponents about twelvo yards from the finish and won comfortably by n yard. About r. foot separated second and third.
