SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the Wanganui and Tolaga Bay Meetings close tomorrow, also nominations for the Woodvillc Autumn Meeting. Windbag's dam Charlcvillc, by Charlemagne—Nithscvo, had to bo destroyed recently at Mr Percy Miller's stud in New .South Wales. Owen was omitted from the telegraphed list of acceptances for the Waimangu Handicap at Itotorua.

The lunud marn Cooing, with filly foal at foot by Paladin, and in foal again to heighten, has been disposed of by Captain J. Gage Williams to Mr J. Magill, a New South Wales stu-lmastcr.

A good steeplechaser is worth a lot of money in England, and in December Mr Piimer-Sankcy announced his nine-year-old gelding, Kuddyglow, was for sale. Tho price asked was £SOOO, with a. contingency of £2OOO if Ruddyglow should win the Liverpool Grand National this year or next. Biiddyglow is good. In 1925 he won 13 of 10 steeplechases in which he started, ami Mr Filmcr--Bankey was his rider in each. A yearling brother to Itnmpion (JtosBendalc—Royal Pet) is among the lots to bo offered at the thoroughbred sales in Sydney at Easter.

J. Munro has been engaged to ride Valiearo in any races in which she may run in Mcibourno at tho autumn Meetings. Presumably he will also bo on her at Randwick. The All Aged Stakes is tho only w.f.a. race in which Valiearo is likely to start at tho A.J.C. Autumn Meeting, and that is one for which Munro will not bo required for Windbag, seeing tho Cumberland Stakes is run tho same day. An English exchange mentions the death in a Manchester hospital of Geo. Donoghuc, brother of Steve Donoghuc, the prominent jockey. George Donoghuo was also a jockey at ono period, riding winners in England, Ireland, and France, but of late years was ono of the many tipsters who addressed, racegoers before each race, and sold their selections for half a crown. Tho amount of money tho tipsters got in that fashion is surprising. It was always a sore point with Stcvo Donoghuo that his brother was in tho raeecoirrao tipster ranks. In some comments on travelling horses tho American veterinary surgeon, Dr. Woodroffe, wrote a* follows in tho Lexington "Thoroughbred Bccord": "I havo accompanied horses on all kinds of journeys by land and sea, and am satisfied that tho less grain a horse gets tho better. Water frequently, feed sparingly has been my rule—allow them to pick all the hay they want, and givo a small bran mash occasionally. It is not a bad idea to compel them to pick their hay from tho bales. It seems to divert the animal's attention, and keep him from wearying on a long journey."

In Australia many jockeys nnd traincri who subsequently became prominent at "the horses" commenced at "tho ponies." It was tho snmo with tho brothers, F. and L. B. Rces; who nro leading cross-country jockeys in England, Their first experience of race riding was at pony meetings in Wales. Later Fred rode as an amateur under National Hunt rules, and then became a professional. L.B. commenced 0 his career in the professional ranks. Fred won tho 1021 Grand National Steeplecbaso on Shaun Spadnh, nnd tho yenr following L.B. won that race on Music Hal).

Tho death has occurred in' Sydney of Mr William Brown, who waa moat conspicuous in sporting circles in Australia a few yean ago. Ho was a brother of Mr John Brown, who races ns "Mr J. Baron," and n member of the firm of J. and A. Brown. It was failing health that caused him to retire from all participation in the sport. His Segcnhoo stud was dispersed in January, 1918, and some big prices were obtained. The stallion Tressady brought 6000 guineas, while among tho racehorses Thana brought 3000 guineas.

TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the Gtahuhu T.C.'s Summer Meeting close on Friday at 5 /p.m. Satisfactory acceptances hare been received by the Metropolitan T.C. for its Summer Meeting. The principal race, the Midsummer Handicap, has drawn a field of eleven horses, including Cardinal Logan, Logan Lou, Loganwood, Jack Potts, Queen's Own, Logan Chief, Black. Admiral, and . Golden Devon, . while in the minor •vents are auch welt-known performers aa Native Chief, Don Wild, Talnro, Bonny Logan, Peter Bingen, Golden Devon, Taureknreka, Sea Pearl, Logan Holme. Shine Soon. Money Spider, Escapade. John Mauritius, Master Audo, Born Bingen, Happy Rosa, Our Lady, Duke Bingen, and Blue Thprpe.

Sea Pearl is nicely treated in the Otnhuhu Cup. The New Brighton-train-ed mare won the forbury Handicap on the concluding day of tho Forbury Park T.C* Summer Meeting from 4.29, and is still on tho same mark.

The pacing maro Bonalena lias been transferred from J. J. Kcnncrley's to 0. Donald's stable. Recent additions to B. B. Berry's team aro two mares by Logan Pointer from Law Chimes and Mystic respectively.

Tho Hawera Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme for its annual meeting. For the two days, £4030 will be distributed in stakes, the principal race on the .first day being the Hawera Trotting Cup of £6OO, including a silver cup valued at £9O, and on the concluding day the Waimato Plains Handicap is worth £450. Both races are run over a two milt) journey, and for horses that can do 4.42 or better.

T! i well-known pacing stallion Author Dillon is in tho private sale list.

Tho Auckland trainer, J. Shaw, has » strong team in work, and is likely to assist flt Otnhuhu with Jewel Pointer, Arnario, Acron, Rockburn, Bittern, Betty Moko, Great Audo, and Peter McDonald. At a meeting of tho Owners' and Breeders' Association, held last evening, it was decided to ask the Otahuhu Trotting Club to extend the closing time of acceptances from to-morrow at 5 p.m. to Monday, February 14th, at to* same hour.

DUNEDIN J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. TO-DAY'S PROSPECTS. The Autumn Meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club will be opened at Wingatui to-day, and with satisfactory fields, and a good class of contestants engaged an interesting day's racing should result.

The programn;i- will be launched with the Autumn Hurdles Handicap, and ltadiac appears In possess tiic best chance of those engaged, lie is very well at present, and most opposition may lie forthcoming from Kaikahu and Bonomcl.

The Trial Stake- will not be productive of a strong field, and none of the acceptors has any outstanding recommendation. Master Clarence has given promise in hi* track essays, and if he acts up to this, he will prove the best proposition. Princess Mafalda and Lucy Locket arc also worthy of consideration.

The Publicans' Handicap has a high class field cngagul and speculation is certain to take a wide range. In spite of licr Wright, (ili-ntrtiiii i-:uiuot l>u classed as a back number and those who have >cen a marked improvement ill the English marc during the past few weeks will pin their faith to her. Comic Song may be in the limelight if tho sting is out of the ground, in which event he will be strongly supported. The same remark applies to Corn Money, who has been displaying signs of soreness as a result of racing on the hard Treat ham course. Nincompoop has made wonderful improvement since his successful sojourn on the West Coast holiday circuit, and with J. Campbell in the saddle, be will be compelled to submit to vigorous horsemanship. There is no gainsaying the fact that Nincompoop can gallop fast, and if he can be persuaded to deliver tho goods to-day, Ire will make his presence felt at the business end of the journey. Countersign has shown her liking for Wingatui by winning there at the two previous Meetings, and as alio is exceptionally well at present, sho must be considered a formidable proposition. Of the remainder, Young Lochinvar, Arpcnt, Black Duke, and Solrose have possibilities, it will probably bo found that Countersign, Glcntruin, Corn Money, and Nincompoop give promiso of occupying prominent places when the numbers nrc hoisted.

Gay Sonnet, Brightling, and Thorndale will receive public favour in the President's Handicap, tho distance of which, a mile and a quarter, wilf suit the trio mentioned.

The Dunodin Cup Handicap, over.a milo and ft half, should be tlie medium of extensive speculation, and it is difficult at this stage to forecast what will eventually hold pride of honour on tho closure of tho machine. Count Cavour has nrado many friends by his recent track performances, and his feat of winning the event in decisive fashion twelve months ago, will bear much weight with investors. Footfall, Rapier, Centrepiece, and Batlemcnt, comprising other Eiccarton representatives, will- also attract public attention, and there are many followers of the sport who predict that tho places will be filled by the candidates trained at tho Metropolitan course. Tito southern opinion favours Set Sail and Baldowa, and it is possiblo that ono of this pair will bo aent out as tho favourite selection. "Tho bracketed couple, Overdrawn and Circulation, will also have admirers, tho chances of tho latter especially being most favourably fancied. The contest promises to bo ono of tho best in tho history of tho race, and tho public are faced with n trying problem, but a quartet that might be sorted out to provide the lending division, are Rapier, Count Cavour, Set Sail, nnd Circulation.

Silver Coot made a good impression at Wellington,, but with 9.6 ia tlio Champagne. Stakes, he will encounter a difficult task to finish ahead of Jericho and Arrowy, who both saluted tho judge at tho Duncdin Summer Meeting. Don Jose, who wilt bo coupled with Silver Coot, may luck experience, and the same nmy' bo snid of the Chokcborc rep-

rcscutativc, Broadmoor and Stringbow. Ark Itoval displayed promise earlier in the season, and if he has progressed well in the interim, he will be in the firing line at tho finish. Indications point to Arrowy, Jericho, and Ark ilova! contesting supremacy. Gold Mint will start -iu the Berwick Handicap, in preference to the President's Handicap, and with better fortune than has been his lot in previous efforts when confidently supported, he should withstand the opposition offering by Speaa Bridge, Overhaul, and Crossbow. , The concluding event, the Stewards Handicap, has fifteen engaged, and recent form suggests John Bradbury, King Sol, and Uphir as a prospective trio.

AT WINGATUI. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (SPECIAL TO TH« PBtSS.) DI'NEDIN, February 9. Pain fell at Wiiigatui on Tuesday, but the weather lias cleared and there appears every prospect of favourable conditions for to-morrow's races. Ine tracks benefited considerably by tho rain, and with a good coating of grass on the inside of the course proper, tho jroin-i promises to be in exceptionally line order. All the acceptors of the Cup were produced on tho track this morning, and. indulged in useful work. Both the Cii» and the Publicans' Handicap arc still considered open contests, but tho chances of Papier, .Set Sitl. and Circulation in the former, and of Glentruni, Corn Money. Countersign, and Comic .•niiic. in the six furlong rncc, are apparently in most favour in Dunedin.

WIHOATUI TRACK WORK. (rr.uss association teuegium.) DUNKDLN, February 0. The Wiiigiilui track was in good order for the flnul gallops this morning. Set Sail ran soven furlongs in 1.30 2-5, pi.-king up Buglo Nolo »t tho nvo-furlong poit, and beating him home. Tho more was tender on pulling up. Count favour. Kapler, and Centrcplcco went nine furlongs, tho Inst eight taking 1.46. Tho lastriinmcd wan on tho outside, and had slightly tho best of it. Cliickwlic.it and Front Hank went seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5. Tho But two took 24, three 38 1-5, and the half-mile 10 1-5. Glcntniin wax not doing her beat over seven furlongH in 1.U3. Footfall went 10 furlongs In 2.17. Comic Song, after two circuits on the plough, sprinted home over five furlongs in 1.5. Arpcnt covered six furlongt. easily in 1.20. Watcrlow did four furlongs In 53 2-5. Tlmbroncy went three furlongs in SOsec. Ark Royal did tho last four furlongs of eight in 58. Baldowa sprinted four furlongs along the back In 50 2-5. Father O'Flynn showed improved form, nnd sprinted two furlongs down the straight in 27. Courtly Rose was beaten by John Bradbury over a mile, the last seven furlongs taking 1.34 2-5. Tholoraon went well over threo furlongs in 39. Katon Rellsdid four furlongt in 54. Corn Money easily beat Lady Lucy over six furlongs in 1.22 4-5. » Shandre belt Scion over six furlongs in 1.1!) 1-5. The Cup riders arc:—Count Cavour, F. C. Porter; Footfall. F. Voight; Rapier. J. Bcale; Centrepiece, F. E. Jones; Set Sail, C, Emerson; Overdrawn, J. Brodie; Circulation, L. Kills; Baldowa, A. Oldham; Battlement, A. Brown; Pink Note, 0. Eastwood; Vaward, T. Metcalf; Courtly Rose, A. Eastwood. N.Z. METROPOLITAN T.C.
