31. Briand, French Prime Minister, sepaking at a luncheon in honour of the poilus, again appealed for peace between France and Germany. He said: , , "The Germans are a great people—a formidable nation of both good and bad qualities. I say here that France and Germany have fought throughout the centuries. Must we continue to fight every decade?"
