CHEVIOT COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the last meeting of the Cheviot County Council, there were present: Cf'a. J. H. L. Hlatt (chairman), Thos. Stevenson, W. L. Foster, and Sholto Douglas. The County Clerk reported that £6545 8s 8d had been collected In general rates, leaving £4 2s lOd outstanding. Riding balances were as follows:—Hawkswood, £49 Os 8d; Hurunuf, £212 17s 8d; Kalwara, £448 8s 6d; and Waiau, £3BB ss; and debits, Lowry £176 19s 9d, Parnassus £43 12s lOd, and Seaward £l2l 12s 6d. Further correspondence was received in connexion with the rebuilding of the Hurunui River bridge from the Main Highways Board, suggesting that a conference be called of the local authorities in the Highway Distriot No. 18. A traffic tally taken for the week ending June 9th showed that 284 vehicles had crossed the bridge as follows: —Motor-cam 200, service cars 39, other vehicles 45, carrying 768 passengers. The Council resolved that before any good could be done by calling a conference that an estimate of the new bridge shonld be ascertained, together with the subsidy the Highways Board proposed to make. Mr B. 0. Warrington applied for a slaughter-house license. The Council recommended that the application be granted. The renewed hospital levy for the current year showed a decrease of £2B 8s 4d. A letter was reoeived from the Canterbury Retail Drapers' Association stating that there were a number of hawkers operating in the county without havnig paid a fee. The clerk was instructed to ascertain the offenders' names and take steps accordingly. The chairman (Or. Hiatt) was appointed the Council's representative on the Highways District Counoil for a further term.
