, —4 •• DISTRIBUTOR IN COURT. "Tins is a most extraordinary tiling' ; and you've got off lightly," said Mr If. Y. "Widdowson. S.M. to a milkman in the Magistrate's' Court yesterday. He lined Herbert Edward Brandon, a milkman, £5 and costs for having sold miliv containing added water. . Mr P. K. Halo represented tbc defendant, who pleaded guilty to charges of having on March 1-lth sold milk which did not comply with the standard and adding wr.ter to the milk. Counsel said that defendant had no dairv •of his own, but collected milk from farmers in the Halswell district. Mr A. W. Brown, who 'appeared for the Department, said that the test showed a deficiency of over 17 per cent. The Magistrate: That is five gallons of water "in thirty-five gallons of milk. Mi- Hale: AVe do not know how the water pot into the milk. The Magistrate: It's'an extraordinary amount of water. Defendant said that he had dealt in milk all his life, and had never been in trouble before. He could not account for the presence of water in the milk. A test at Lincoln College of his milk in October had shown that it was above standard. The Magistrate said that the onus was on-the defendant, and he'would bo convicted and fined £o, and costs 7s', together with analyst's fee 10s 6d, solicitor's fee £3 3s on the more serious charge. On the other charge he was ordered to pay costs and solictors'* fee £1 Is.
