RUGBY. FRIENDLY GAMES. CHRIST'S COLLEGE V. 'VARSITY. Two interesting games were played yesterday between Christ's College and University, the first match being between tho College first fifteen and the 'Varsity Junior A team, and tho other between Collcgo seconds and 'Varsity under 20. FIRST FIFTEENS. Flay was even in the first half, which ended with the ecore S—nil in favour of Christ's College. The College backs did not get going well, Taplry passing rather late, and allowing the centre three-quarter, Wilson, to become rather heavily marked. Tho 'Varsity forwards were heavier, and broke through frequently. The first score came from a penalty outside the twenty-five, Lumsden landing a good goal. Towards halftime, a forward rush ended in Johnston beating two men and scoring a good try. Lumsden converted, and tho teams crossed over with the ecoro B—nil against 'Varsity. In the second spell the College backs showed better form, and from a scrum the ball camo to Wilson, who, cutting in, scored between the posts. Tho total then mounted quickly to 2S—nil, tries being secured by Williams (2) and Tapley, Lumsden converting all three. 'Varsity now took a share of tho attacking, and a passing rush gave Rutherford a. try, which was converted; 28—5. 'Vartity again broke through and Brownleo scorrd. The kick was unsuccessful. Johnston scoring shortly afterwards and Lumsden gosling, the game ended 33—8 in favour of Christ's College. Referee, Mr T. W. Tothill. SECOND FIFTEENS. " Christ's College Becond fifteen were- also successful in their game against 'Varsity, the score being 16—3. Tries for the winners were scored by Hill (2), Douglass, and A. C. Tripe, tho latter converting three. SECONDARY SCHOOLS. FIRST ROUND. The Christchurch Secondary Schools' Rugby football competition commenced yesterday, tfainea being played in the tinder Bst 71b grade, and in the tinder 7st 71b grade. Considering all circumstances, tho standard of play was fairly high, some close and interesting matches resulting. Heavy-weight Grade. Playing at the Polo Grounds, West Christchurch District High School beat Boys' High School B by 50 to nil. Mr W. W. Brassington was referee. The game between Boys' High School A and St. Andrew's College was postponed. Playing at the Polo Grounds, Technical College A beat Technical College B by 8 to 3. Mr G. S. A. Biltoliff was referee. Cathedral Grammar School had o> bye. Light-weight Grade. UPPER SECTION. Playing at tho United Ground, Technical College A beat Boys' High School B by 14 to 3. Mr J. Nicol was referee. The Auckland Rugby Union decided tonight not to undertake a tour of the South Island this year, but to arrange for a short North Island tour, comprising matches against Hawks's Bay, Waiararapa, Wellington, and Taranaki. It was stated that advice had been received from Canterbury, Otago, and Wellington Unions regretting- that they could not advance £IOO each as suggested toward tho expenses of the proposed South Maud tour, which was consequently abandoned. LEAGUE. EXECUTIVE MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby League was held laßt ovoning, Mr T. B. Carpenter presiding over an attendance of delegates representing all the clubs. It was decided to replay the WaimairiMarist junior game at tho end of the season, owing to tho • ground not having been properly laid out. C. Growcott (Marist) and N. Waghorn (Hornby) were transferred to the West Coast Club, the last-named being regraded from senior to junior. The Junior Advisory Board advised that 19 teams had entered the sixth grado competition. It had been decided that tho League accept the registration of all junior players until the next meeting, when tho Junior Board would take over; also that in futuro all registrations should be sent direct to the Board. Mr Falgar (Addington) had reported that his club had reversed its decision to withdraw its third grade team, in view of the enlistment of new players.. A letter waß received from tho secretary of tho Addington Club registering three new players, and asking if there was a possibility of an arrangement whereby Waimairi team, when meeting Addington, should play in representative jerseys, in view of the similarity of colours. It was decided '.hat in future, in all cases . where the similarity of colours waa such | a« to cause confusion, ono team should play in representative jerseys. Interpretation of Rules. The secretary of the Waimairi Club wrote etating that it had ooms to the notice of the club that referees had a varied interpretation of the- rules. The club suggested that, with the Centre's approval, clubs be asked 1 to forward questions to the Referees' Association, and obtain its opinion on euoh vital matters. This would tend to make the decisions uniform. It was decided to adviso all clubs that the Referees' Association was prepared to answer all questions if the facts were stated. Junior Advisory Board. The Junior Advisory Board reported on its. activities during tha previous eeason. The endeavour of the League to obtain tho _ interest of the school boya and also boys just leaving school had proved a great success. Schoolboys to Tour. Mr C. Tilleyshort, chairman of the Board, said that it was proposed to send a representative schoolboys' team to Auckland during the season. Mr A. Russell eaid that his club (Addington) waa receiving enthusiastic support in the lower gradeß, the prospect of tours to other parts of the Dominion making a strong appeal to the boys. Mr F. Smyth said that spectators had encroached badly on the No. 2 ground at Monica Park during tho progress of the Hornby-Sydonham match. It was decided to ask clubs to nominate touehline umpires for matches on Monica Park in which their teams are not engaged. Insurance of Flayers. The chairman detailed tho result of enquiries made regarding the insurance o£ players. He statod that it was possible the League would bo able to obtain the services of a legal man as judicial commissioner. The Match Committee was asked to report on the advisability of holding a seven-a-sido tournamont in all grades on June 3rd. Shortage of Referees. Delegates referred to the dearth of referees, the general opinion being that clubs should bo asked to treat the problem as a matter of urgency, and call on retired players to take the whistle. It was decided to procure referees' for uso on Monica Park. New Zealand Council. .The annual report of the New Zealand Council was received. It stated that tho year had proved most successful from a financial point of view, tho amount of cash in hand nnd at the bank nt tho end of the period amounting to £llBB 12s lOd.
