Simes and 00., National Mortgage and Agenoy Co., Ltd., Nicholls and Co., Ltd., Tonks, Norton, and Co., Ltd., and Charles Clark appear on Page 15 of this issue. Tho following telegram was received yesterday from Mr Rowntree, who left on Monday in charge of 700 children for the Exhibition"Good trip, all well; weather fine; arrangements working excellently." Of the Drainage Board's £700,000 loan for tha extension of the sewers, £366,555 has been raised by the Bale of debentures, and the total expended has been £338,966. The amount to credit on March 31st last was £27,618. The official announcement of the result of the Waimakariri River Trust's poll last week on its £200,000 loan proposal appears in this issue. The Trust's policy in resgect of river control will be discussed at the next ordinary meeting. "Eliza Elizabeth" was the unusual combination of Christian names of one of the parties to a case heard in the Supreme Court at Auckland. Mr Justice Read questioned the correctness of the name on the papers, and remarked upon its singularity. Ho was assured that it was quite correctly quoted. At last night's meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union, Mr S. F. Wilson said that, with Dr. W. S. Seed, he had waited on the Board of Control of .Lancaster Park with reference to season tickets-. The Board had accepted a proposal that life members be admitted to the same part of the enclosure as that used by holders of season tickets, but they would be obliged to obtain a ticket from the secretary every Saturday. The agreement was endorsed.

Some time last Thursday night or early on Friday morning, what appears to have been an attempt to burglariously enter St. James's Church, Riccarton, was made. Jemmy marks on the main entrance door indicate that an endeavour to get in had been made there; there were also jemmy marks on the bell-tower door. It is difficult to imagine _ what the burglar expected to find in the church to reward him, as there is no money left about, and the collection boxes are cleared regularly.

A marked contrast to the scientific and detailed enumeration of this year's census is provided by an old gazetteer; published in 1844, brought into the Auckland "Herald" Office by a resident of Mount Eden. The only reference to New Zealand in a table of the world's population at that time is as follows: "Oceanica or Oceania. Area, between three and four million square miles. Population extremely uncertain, estimated by different authors at two or twenty millions." Anzao Day will be definitely observed next Sunday, and not on the following Monday, according to official information received from Wellington by the Labour Department in Chriatehurch, The banking institutions will observe a holiday on the Monday. The Statute prescribes that where a publio holiday falls on a Sunday it shall be observed on the following day, but Anzao Day is omitted from this regulation. The banks have declared a holiday under section 23 (a) of" the Banking Aot, 1908, which states that any bank holiday falling on a Sunday must be observed on the following Monday. After having been closed for about eighteen months as a result of a big washout at the Eyre bridge close to Oxford West, the railway line between Oxford and Sheffield will be re-open-ed shortly. The work of filling in the washout was begun on Monday, When the washout occurred, the Railway Department was unable to decide whether it was worth while going to the expense of repairing the damage owing to the small amount of use that bad been made of the line. The Department has now apparently decided that it would be justified in carrying out the work. The washout was about: three or four chains in lengths and the line was left suspended for that distance at a height of about twelve or fifteen feet. The Department proposes to fill in the gap on the river side of the line with old locomotive boilers from the Addington and Hillside railway workshops, about twenty altogether being used for this purpose. These boilers, which are of no use for any other purpose, and are not considered worth breaking up for sprap iron, will provide an efficient protection from the river when it is in flood. The boilers themselves will be filled up with ballast. Owing to the danger of building operations damaging a huge quantity of expensive and seasonable goods, Armstrong's are holding a "extractor's sale," and the prices that all goods have been reduced to is so attractive that everyone should avail themselves of this rare opportunity of replenishing their stockß of clothing, household linen, millinery, and othor general drapery. —0
