TWO MONTHS.
RUFFIAN GOES TO GAOL. OLD PEOPLE ASSAULTED. "He grabbed me by die throat ami tried to choke me. He pitched me on the floor and knelt on me with his knee and hit me on the head with u battle of beer and drank the beer alterwards. . . . And he swore and called me names and 1 yelled 'Help! Murder!' Then old Mr Lilly came in but he just picked him up and threw him in the grat.'! . . . He's strong he is, and he's got a big fist. . . ."' This was part of the evidence given b.- Charlotte liruvcrc, aged GO years, ol Kilmoro street, City, which went to atsist the police in establishing a case against Andrew Price, residing i" k- I '- more street. City, who was charged in the Court-yesterday with having assaulted Bruvere, with having assaulted Joseph Lilly, aged SO years, by hitting him on the head with a bottle, ami with having used indecent language one evening in Kilniore street in February. "As a Peace Offerer." In evidence, Charlotte liruycre had explained that she had gone across to Price's" place ,; as a t«ace offerer to settle things between Price r.nd »'» wife. "Just after 1 got inside," she said, "I spoke to him and then he jumped at me and grabbed my throat. . . . . This is what he did to me. she declared. "Look at this." and she pulled a torn, blood-stained blouse and singlet from a handbag. "And here s some hair," holding out her hand. ' He did it with the bottle," she explainedEvidence was also given by Joseph Lillv who said that he went into Price's, place and that Price assaulted him with a bottle and "threw me m the grate." , Police Sergeant T. I. McGregor a»« a neighbour also gave evidence. The Defence. Tho defence was based on submissions that Lillv had been worrying Price for rent for 'some time and that Price had pushed Bruvere and Lilly when they came into his place, but he denied having assaulted them as they alleged. The presiding Magistrate ("Mr H A. Young) held Price guilty on all three charees. , "He will be convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting the woman and on each of the other charges he will be Eer.tenced to one month's imprisonment, the sentences to be concurrent.
