FARES TO SYDNEY.
INCREASE ON MAIL LINERS. With the object' of regulating the passenger traffic between Auckland ana Sydney, and vice versa, the Union Company have decided to increase the fares for passengers making the trip across the Tasman by' either the R.M.M.S. Aorangi or the R.M.S. Niagara. The Aorangi and the Niagara are acknowledged as the most luxuriously fitted and speediest of the liners making regular visits to Auckland or any other New Zealand port. For these reasons passengers have shown a tendency to make their arrangements so as to travel by one or other of the mail liners. As a result, although recently steamers engaged in the intercolonial service have been fairly heavily booked, the larger vessels have been rushed and their accommodation has been severely taxed. In almost everv case all the passengers have been allotted berths, but a little crowding has resulted. "This tendency to travel bv the mail liners in preference to the inter-colonial steamers has become more pronounced during recent months. In order to cope with this new diffi-. cully of finding accommodation for al who* prefer travelling by the mail liners, the Union Company have decided to make a difference in the fares on the two classes of vessels. The present first and second saloon fares on the mail liners of £l2 10s and £lO will be ijiCieased by £2 and- £1 respectively, while passengers travelling in the third saloon will bo required to pay an additional 10s on the present rates. This alteration in fares will come into force on March 29th, on which date the Aorangi 13 announced to sail from Auckland for Sydney. It is anticipated that the increase will regulate the numbers of passengers by all vessels and thus benefit the conditions of ail concerned. The alteration in fares will in no way affect the Eoyal Mail steamers engaged in the San Francisco service which call ?.t 'Wellington on both north and south trips.
