Stewart, n'cconipaueid by Mrs Stewart, left this morning for" Christchurch, where lie has been appointed to, a position on the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd. Prior to leaving the Greymouth branch; where he has been stationed for the past ten years, Mr Stewart was the recipient of a presentation, which was made on behalf of the staff by the'.manager, Mr J. The Eev. Father Brennan, who succeeds the Eev. Father Sweeney, arrived in Westport yesterday. , The Eev. A. Miller, of Westport, arrived in Greymouth to-day to attend a meeting of the Presbytery.. Miss N. Decre left this morning for Wellington, where she will join the Uninaroa, en route to Australia. Nurse A. Napier Hospital, who has. been visiting Mrs E Hal, returned this morning to the jNorth Island. ~ ~ ~ , Mrs H. B Burnett (Auckland) and Mrs James Kerr (Petoue), former residents of Greymouth, will arrive by Saturday's express. Mr and Mrs Meldrum, of Cobden, with their family, leave on Thursday next for Dunediu, where they will in . future reside. Lady Marjorie Dalrymple, organiser of the Girl Guides, will arrive in Reefton on Saturday next. The death occurred last evening at the Beefton Hospital of Mr Wm. Campbell, aged 09 years. Deceased was formerly in business at Ngahcrc as a carrier anu\ mail contractor. He later removed to Ecefton, where be engaged' in hotel-keeping. Belinquishing the

Motorists who traversed the overland route between Christchureh and Greymouth on Sunday last report that the road over the Otira Gorge is in good repair. One motorist left Christchureh at 9 a.m. on Sunday and arrived in Greymouth at 5 p.m. He stated that the reports circulated in Christchureh in connexion with the road over the Gorgo were contrary to fact. Mining. The services of about fourteen men were dispensed with at the New Big Biver Mine last week. South Westiand Stock. A stock train left for Christchureh this morning containing about one. thou< sand sheep and lambs, and forty pigs. The whole of the stock is from South Westiand. Greyznouth Harbour Board. A meeting of the Greymoutb Harbour Board was held this evening. Present: Messrs J. Steer (chairman), Tennent, W. Leitch, G. E. Perkins, and P. J. Mc Lean. The Treasury remitted wharfage amouning to £1478 17s 7d, and wharf charges, State coal, £963 lis. The Minister for Bailways wrote with reference to special coal rate? on the West Coast area, that the Department had to frame its tariff to meet competition, and had not penalised one section of the community at; the expense of another. Wharf and haulage chaiges were for services performed, and no reduction could be advised. The Board decided to ascertain the charges levied by the Kailway Department at other ports. The District Engineer of Bailways advised- the Board that repairs required to the siding to tho honey grading store would'cost £IOB 7».
