SHORTHORN SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the shorthorn Society of New "Zealand was leld in the Canterbury. Chamber of Commerce H'aJl, 'Mr R. E. Alexander presiding. ' The balance-sheet showed tho Society to be in a good financial position, the assets exceeding tho liabilities by £909 9s edit waa reported that during i-he year Volume XX. of the Herd Book lad been published, containing tho pedigrees of 265 Lulls, 535 heifers, and 111 transfers of ownership, and that Volume XXI. w»a in print and would contain the pedigrees of approximately 255 hulls, 700 cows and heifers, and 100 transfers ot ownership. It was hoped t'> get the ftew volume into the hands of breeders by the middle of December. The Society's shields offered for the champion Shorthorn bull at the -various shows resulted in the following awards being made: Napier, Mr 11. D. Douglas McLean's Royal liaron, 5691; Christchurch, Mr Leonard White's Prince Paul (imp.), 6268; Invercavull, Mr L. W. Slorry's Westburn Marquis of iQueensbury, 4081; Greymouth, Mr John Deans's "Westburn Marquis of Argyle, Hoi. ; Aa suggested at the last annual meeting, the' executive- had obtained a challenge cup, at a cost of 25 guineas-, for competition at Royal Shews, to be awarded to the best Shorthorn (male or feimale) exhibited, and at the 192 i show thi3 was won by Milt. D. D. McLean. Members wore urged to continue registration of all their stock, for although adverse markets had ruled during the last few years there were strong indications o£ improving conditions in this respect. . Since the close of the nnancial year Mr Arnaud McKellar had been appointed secretary, in place of 'Mr Banks. Mr R. E. Alexander was re-elected presi-' dent and Mr Alex Hunter yicc-president.
