RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS TO CANTERBURY;

The Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee to-day selected C. E. Low, 8.A., and M. Barak, B.Sc., both of Canterbury College, as the New Zealand Rhodes Scholars for 1926.

An extra scholarship had been awarded to the Dominion; hence the selection of two nominees.

Mr Montelioro Barak was born on September RJth, iyU4, and was educated at the "Warea School (Taranaki) trom 1910 to 1916. at tho New Plymouth High School from 1916 to 1921, and at Canterbury College since 1922. In 1916 he was dux of the preparatory department of the Now Plymouth High School; in 1917 ho gained a Junior National Scholarship, and in 1919 he won a Senior National Scholar ship. During each year from 1916 to 1921 ho won first prize in his form, and in 1921 was dux of the school. While at High School Mr Barak was twice a member of tho shooting team which won the "Weekly Press" Shield, and was in turn a "member of the schools' third, 6econd, and first Rugby fifteen. In his first year (1922) at Canterbury College Mr Barak passed the first section of his B.Sc, which he completed in 192-1. In 1924 he also won the Sir George Grey scholarship. At the University ho continued to play Rugby, and in 1924 was captain of the second fifteen, and in 1925 a member of the first fifteen, and was also chosen as an emergency for tho New Zealand University team to play the Sydney University. He also represented Canterbury College in its shooting team at the Annual Inter-University tournaments. In 1924 he was gazetted Second-Lieutenant of the Now Zealand Engineers. In 1925 lie was president of the College Students' Association, and chairman of the Now Zealand University Tourna-ment-Committee. In sport Mr Barak's interests have been chiefly confined to football, shooting, and tennis, but he also has taken part in athletics andboxing. Mr Charles Eugene Low, was born on March 9th, 1003. He attended the Opawa Primary School from 1908 to 1916, the Christchurch Bovs' High School from 1917 to 1921, and Canterbury College from 1922 to 1920. At tho Higli School ho secured a number of form prizes, in 1920 he passed the matriculation, .and in 1921 secured a higher leaving certificate. In swimming and running he won practically everything to be won at school. In 1918 he established a record for b6vs under sixteen, and in 1919 "established records in the intermediate championships of New- Zealand in the 100, 220, and 880 yardß. In 1923, his second year at Canterbury College, Mr Low won the John Connei Scholarship for Latin, English, and French, and in 1924 completed his B.A. His record in swimming and athletic events is a splendid one. In 1924 ho was the champion swimmer of the College, was a member of the first Rugby fifteen, and winner of four or five athletic championships. He represented Canterbury College at the Dominion Athletic Championships at Wanganui, and was second in the 440 yards hurdles, and second in putting the shot. At the New Zealand University Tournament at Wellington, he won four events, and secured a trophy for the highest number of points at the meeting. In athletics, football and swimming, Mr Low has had few equals at Canterbury College, and has been outstanding in all tho important branches of College life. "~
