MORNING FIRE.

IN CITY BLOCK. NO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. A spark from the chimney of the Empire Cafe igniting old snow-boards oil the roof of 1\ Woods and Company's furniture factory was responsible for a fire in a block of buildings .it the corner of Manchester and Lichfield streets at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. The buildings are iairly old. and only energetic work by the City Fire Brigade prevented possible disaster. An employee of Woods and Co. was working at liis bench when he noticed molten lead dropping from the ceiling, and "looking un he found that a fire had .started between ilie ceiling and the roof. He gave the alarm, and the brigade was promptly on the scene. Four leads of hose were taken up through the roof, and the efforts of the brigade prevented the ilames from spreading from the roof of the Empire Cafe. ' "We had a hot time on the roof while it lasted." .said the Deputy-Superiiiren-ient to a ' Press" reporter, "but we managed to subdue tho outbreak before any extensive damage had been done." Woods and Company's workshop and the Empire Cafe were affected by water, the stock and plant of tho termer company receiving a small amount of damage. The insurances on the stock and plant of the Empire C'afti amount to €IOOO with the State Fire Office, and Woods and Co. have their property covered in the National Office to the extent of £I3OO. The buildings had recently been purchased by Messrs John Fuller and .Sons, Ltd.. and they intend ,to build a new theatre during the next year or so. The actual amounts of the insurance are not available, but the policies are jointly controlled by the Commercial Union and the Koval Offices. Be prepared.
