Flesher, chairman of the Association's committees, presided over a fairly large attendance. A polopies for absence were received from Sir Ileatoii Rhodes, Messrs C. J. l»onaldson, H. L. Bowkei-j and Dr. J. 11. Thomas.

Annual Report,

The annual report presented stated that his Excellency the Governor-General. Sir Charles Fergus<on. Bar',., consented io fill the office of pros-idem of the rendered vacant by the retirement of Earl Jeilicoo. During the year -7 classes of instruction in first aid and home nursing were formed. The number who attended courses of not- fewer than five lectures (including members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade who attended corps, lectures) was 697. as compared with 524 the previous year: of this year's total 575 were entitled to certificates (348 'he previous year), and of these 24 qualified for the medallion (27 the previous year), and 91 for the label (75 the previous year). Several conferences were held with the Red Cross executive, and arrangements were made with a view to avoiding overlapping of effort, and for instructional work to be carried on by the Red Cross in country districts where the Association was not actively engaged. Regarding classes in first aid of mixed sexes, the Ambulance Committee of St. John's Gate, England, had decided that the senior representative of the Association in each Dominion be authorised, in very special and exceptional cases, when separate classes were impossible, to grant permission for classes of mixed sexes in first aid to be held, after permission had been obtained, and provided that the sexes occupy separate or divided rooms for the practical work. Applications from sub-centres for such classes should be sent in, in the first place to the secretary of the Centre. The two motor ambulances had done good work, though the number of cases (1045 as compared with 1158) and the mileage (7314 as compared with 8334) were less than in the previous year. Total expenses amounted to .£'s6o 10s 9d, and receipts to £553 8s 3d. In addition to 4(j first aid depots in different parts of the district, a number of sports grounds had been provided with a stretcher each. 'The annual appeal for funds for the Association realised £724 7s 9d; the expenditure (chiefly for printing and advertising) was £lO2 15s sd. The committee thanked members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade for actinias demonstrators at classes formed at headquarters. Mr A. Fisher was appointed lay lecturer on first aid at Rewanui, and Mr J. W. Quinn at Seddonville. Thanks were accorded the ladies and gentlemen who had helped the Association in various ways during the year. The balance-sheet showed an excess of receipts over expenditure of £272 5s lOd. The cash assets of the Association total £1367 3s Id.

Reports from the Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate, and Westport sub-centres are appended to the annual report. The annual report of the St. John Ambulance Brigade states that there was a slight increase in membership—2l9 fully qualified as compared with 215 for the previous year. Members attended 2681 cases o£ first aid and transport (1592 previous year). At sports gatherings 876 cases were attended to. Vacancies in the Christchurch Corps Staff had been filled by the appointment of Mrs H. H. bmitli as lady corps superintendent and Mrs \Y. Middleton as corps storekeeper. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and .balance-sheet, expressed the pleasure felt by all connected with the Association that his Excellency the Governor-General had accepted the position of president. With reference to the co-operation between the Association and the Red Cross, lie said that it wa.s gratifying tnat the utmost good ieeling existed and that there was no friction and no overlapping. Speaking of the permission given to hold mixed classes in special circumstances, he said that the needs, of the country districts were becoming more acute and pressing, and but for the permission to hold mixed classes tlie Association could not hope to meet those needs. Referring to the work of tho St. John Ambulance Brigade, he said that the public as a whole did not appreciate the most important work and service rendered free, voluntarily, and enthusiastically by members of the Brigade trained under the auspices of the Association. They had reason, be said in .conclusion, to be satisfied with the past year's work. Colonel F. B. Creswell seconded the adoption of the report and balancesheet, which was agreed to without discussion. The Brigade.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet of the Brigade, the chairman said that though the classes liad not grown to such large dimensions as. might have, been wished, the members as a whole had been keen and enthusiastic in their work. He especially commented on the -work of the Christchurch Railway Ambulance Division, which during'the' year had attended to 1204 cases. _ Major A. L. Gray, Assistant Commissioner, seconded the motion, and expressed his gratification with the work of the Brigade. Regarding the West Coast, he 6aid that difficulties were being experienced, but it was hoped that the movement would regain the position it had attained in the few years prior to the war.
