NUMBER PLATES.
IDENTIFICATION' AT SIGHT. CITY - COUNCIL'S DECISION. On the recommendation of the Bylaws and Finance Committee, the City Council at its meeting on Tuesday night adopted tho following report, which was presented by the Chief 1 "raffle Inspector in respect of distinguishing mai'Ks on licensed vehicles:— Owing to tho coming into force of the Motor Vehicles Act 14)24, Section 207 (5) of the Christchurch By-law No. 1 becomes inoperative. Section 7 (2) of the Act provides that every person who affixes or causes to be atrixed to any motor vehicle any distinguishing mark which is not authorised T>v the Act, or by regulations thereunder, and which is likely to be mistaken for an authorised mark commits an offence.
It is important' and necessary that we should know and recognise at sight motor vehicles which are licensed, and in respect of which the fee to ply for hire has been paid. I recommend that Sub-section 5 b© cancelled andi replaced by the following: Every owner sha.ll immediately upon being granted a license for a public motor-cab, public motor-van or public motor-omnibus, affix thereto as desired by the Traffic Inspector an indication plate supplied by the Council. During the time such vehicle shall be licensed such plat© to be kept so affixed, and in such manner as to be plain-. ]y- visible and legible. The plate is the property of the Council and to be retained at th© expiration of th© license. If plate lost or destroyed a new plat© to be supplied at a cost of 2s.
It shall, be an offence to carry an indication plate affixed to a vehicle dur.ing the time such vehicle is unlicensed.
