The following report of the By-laws and Finance Committee dealing with drivers' lost licenses was adopted at this week's meeting of the City Council The Chief Traffic Inspector has reported that in view of the fact that so many drivers' licenses are boing lost by the owners, and that there >s no provision in •■'Hie Motor Vehicles Act, 1324" or regulations thereunder for tho issue of a copy, tlie Assistant UnderSecretary of the Department of Internal Affairs was communicated with on the matter. A reply was received that it was considered that the Local Authority may, if it sees lit, charge the same fee for the duplicate driver's liceiivse as that charged' for the original license, viz., ss. The committee recommends that a fee of 2s <xl be charged for the issue of a duplicate license. The Southland Motor Association has forwarded the following remit to be considered at the quarterly meeting of the S.I.M.U. at Dunedin nest month: "That the meeting consider the question of the deflection of headlights, and the fixation of spotlights as proposed in the draft Motor llegulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924."

Another remit forwarded by the Southland Motor Association for consideration at the quarterly meeting of the S.I.M.U. is as follows: —"That the Government be urged to adopt legislation making it compulsory for drivers of vehicles to allow traffic approaching on the left at intersections-to have tho right-of-way."

Tho annual meeting of the South Canterbury Automobile Association will ba held at Timaru on November 25th. Members of tho South Island Motor Union wjio will bo proceeding to Dunodin to take part in the quarterly meeting of that body, have been invited to attend.

Motor racing, both for cars and motor-cycles has, during the past two years or so, become exceedingly popular in Australia. In most cases the tracks have been dirt ones, usually converted from horse-racing tracks, but for the future, it appears as though concrete speedways specially designed and constructed for high speeds such as are obtained on the American and European tracks, will soon be the order of the day. The first, speedway of this description, where it is anticipated that speeds of 100 m.p.h and up,wards will bo developed, lias just been completed at Maroubra, Sydney, -within six miles of the G.P.O. at a cost of moro than £60,000, and will be opened to the putlie on December Ist. The track is firesixths of a mil© in length, a'nd the prizes offered for the opening meeting amount to £IOOO.
