A. AND P. SHOW.

SOUTH CANTERBURY. JUDGING DAY. (special to ''the mess.") TIMARU, October 28. Perfect spring weather favoured the opening of the Timaru A. and P. Association's sixtieth annual show at Smithfield to-day. The entries showed a slight decrease as compared with last year, but the stock which came forward was in fine condition, and the comments of the judges in tho various classes were, on the whole, very favourable indeed. The day was devoted principally to the judging of the sheep and cattle, and a few hunters, harness horses. ponies. and produce. The remainder of tho classes will be dealt with ty-morrow. This year's entries as compared with last year's are as follows: 1923.1924. Agricultural produce ... 90 134Preservos and farm produce 104 83 Children's classes ... 57 71 Cookerv ... ... ... 87 1l"> Fruit " 10 o Woof ... ... ... D 9 Pigs ... ... ... 8 31 Does ... ... ...■ 42 32 Dor trial ... ...• 30 32 Sheen, ... ... ~. 391 393 Cattle ... ... ... 16G 200 L-ight horses ... ... 200 323 Draught horses ... ... 07 61 Totals ... ...' 1311 1496 Tt will be noticed that sheep still hold prkle of place on the list, the entries being only two short of last year, and .still well ahead of 1922 actl 1923, when the figures were 328 and 379 respectively. Border and English Leieesfccrs arc most conspicuous, aud appear to Ik> holding their own in the province. Corriedales, too, are in demand, being the nearest to the Leicester classes. .The oilier classes— SyelarAls, Southdowiis. Pomney Marsh, Merinos, aud Shropshire—are moderately represented, but all contain sheep of lino .quality. The fat sheep section has been well patronised, and makes a good display. Light horses hare dropped slightly, but draughts show an increase. This latter section has shown a slight inoreaso each year since 1922, while Hqht horses have been up and down. The entries of cattle show a decrease from 200 last year to 160, but when Compared with the figures of 1923 (114) the position is-most satisfactory. The continued run of wet weather was destined to have on effect on the agricultural produce, and it was not surprising to note a. falling off in this section. The. drop is appreciable, but compares favourably with the. displays of 1922 and 1923. To the list of increases must bo added the preserves and farm, produce, section. Last year the entries totalled 83, but from the table, shown above it will bo seen that j the increase is very, marked, this year's tot si being 101. PRIZE LIST.
