At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Hospital Board, held yesterday, Mr W. T. Lill presided in the .absence of the chairman. There were also present: Messrs J. Bruce, W. G. Gallagher, F. W. Watt, W. Bryant, and A. J. Magson. * The statement of receipts and expenditure for the month showed a debit balance of £954 10s 2d.

The chairman's report stated that during the month one case of tuberculosis was reported, each from Mcthven and Allenton, while two cases of diphtheria were notified from the borough. The chairman of the Hospital Committee (Mr W. T. Lill) stated that since the last meeting three cases had gone to the Waipiata Sanatorium, while there were still two names on tho waiting list.

The reports from the various Homes showed that during the last month 12 patients were admitted, 12 discharged, and 4 remained at Malvern; 5 were admitted, 3 discharged, leaving 3 at Rakaia; and 4 were admitted to Methven, 4 discharged, and 2 remained. "I might be old and fossilised, but I think that there is nothing like the fire for heating and for the comfort of patients during the convalescent stages," stated Mr Lill,-when referring to a portion of the matron's report which stated that radiators were insufficient for the comfort of patients who were out of bed during convalescence. It was decided to have the fireplaces put in order if necessary. The Nelson Hospital Board wrote stating that, with a view to obtaining reliable information regarding equipment for its new hospital, the medical superintendent (Dr. Low) and the secretary (Mr G. P. Chapman) would visit Ashburton .during their tour of the South Island hospitals, with a view to inspecting the Ashburton Hospital and' discussing matters with the executive officers.

The Department of Health advised that the Minister had cxtonded the' authority of the Board for an overdraft for £IOOO until December 31st. The Minister of Finance was being recommended to make an advance on account of subsidy of £IOOO to the Board, with a view to obviating the payment of interest on overdraft. cutting up the surface and were abandoned for the week-end about half-way to their destination. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Pioneer Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held on. Saturday when, in spite of adverse weather conditions, N.G. Bro. Green presided over an attendance of about thirty membere. It was decided to adopt the dispensary rules. Fire candidates, including two ladies, were initiated into the Order. A degree lecture was held, nine members receiving degrees. Final arrangements ' were made for the lodge's anniversary ball. Sick pay and other accounts, totalling £65 Is 6d, were passed for payment. During the week-end the local districts were again deluged in rain. Again there was a flood of surface water, proving that drains and stormwater channels are either insufficient in number or sbe, or have been ajlowed to become- blocked up." It seems at least useless putting fresh shingle on the roads while siurface water is at liberty to wash it off. The flood of surface water was particularly bad about the Springburn railway station and in the vicinity of the Post Office and Manse.
