PADDON FINISHED.

RETIRES FROM SCULLING. WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP PASSES TO HADFIELD. Or cable—rsßss association—coptriget) (AUSTRALIAN- AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received September 24th, 7.55 pan.) SYDNEY, September 23. Paddon to-day definitely announced his retirement as world's eculling champion, and tho titlo now passes to Hadficld. Goodscll has lodged a deposit for a race with Hadficld.

THE NEXT RACE. PROBABLY ON THE WANGANUL (SPZCIAI, TO "THX PBJSSS.") WANGANUI, September 23.

Tho "Herald" says that Mr C. G. Young, .secretary of the Wangamu Sculling Committee, .has received a cable from James Paddon, tho worlds champion sculler, stating that ho has definitely retired from the gamo and is handing tho titlo back to 'D'Arcy Hadjficid, from whom Paddon wrested it on the Wanganui River some 21 months ago. Since then Paddon has met and beaten Hadficld in a. return match on tho Richmond River-and also defeated Al£ Fonton and Major Goodsell. Now that Paddon has decided ta retire, D'Arcy Hadfiold certainly appears to be the man most entitled to tho championship, as it can be 6aid for him that ho gavo Paddon a better race than any of the other challengers. Paddon's retirement means that tho next raco for the world's (cho-mpiorvship will probably be rowed on.tho Wanganui River. It will be remembered that it was Wangamii rowing enthusiasts who found tho money for Hadfleld in bis raco with Dick Arast, from whom D'Arcy won the title. Hadfiold's stake for both his matches with Paddon was ulso found here, and no doubt now that, tho Evans Head piant is out of the game, Hadfield's friends in this district will bo prepared to back him against any challenger in a race, to be rowed here.

HADFIELD READY.

He received injuries to his cheet and right arm and has not yet recovered the full use of his hand. He therefore will not be ablo to go into a boat for another six weeks, as an attempt at serious eculling might bo dangerous. No challenges havo yet been received, but ho expects woid from prominent scullers m Australia and New Zealand. MoDcvitt, Goodsell and Hannan are mentioned ao possible candidates. . Apart from his injuries, Hadheld is fairly fit, the raco at Dargavillc having helped him in this respect. ~,.., Hadfleld thinks tho AYanganui tho fairest coarse to row. It is really an ideal course ho says—well sheltered from etrong winds and easy for steering. The only possiblo trouble is the preaenco of timber in the river in time of flo*d. He said the Waikato at Hamilton was totally unfit for big sculling. In any case, a. sculler was never expected to row against the current.
