Mr Nevil Maskelync, a. famous illusionist, was found dead in bed. He bad suffered from heart trouble for some time, and apparently died in his sleep. Mil HOWARD STRONG. The death took place at Christcburch on Sunday of Mr J. N. Howard Strong, an early New Zealand settler, and a man who took part in the Maori War. Mr Strong was well known in Christchurch, chiefly through his association with the Public Library, having occupied the position of chief librarian for 35 years. Earlier, the late Mr Strong served -with the militia during tho disturbance created by the Han Ha us and Te Kooti.

Born in Exeter, England. S4 years ago, Mr Strong was educated at'a private school at Newton Abbot and Vilvorde, near Brussels. He went to sea for three years; and then came to Lytteltou in 'the Victory in ' ISSO. After going through stirring experiences in tho Poverty Bay district, and being awarded the New Zealand War Medal, Mr Strong came to Christehnrch in 1579, when he was appointed librarian. He resigned ten years ago, and was succeeded by tho'present librarian, Mr E. J. Bell. During tho past- few years he bad lived with his daughter, Mrs G. W. Harding, Craniner square. He was a. member of the Canterbury Veterans' Association and the Canterbury Pilgrims' Association, and attended a. great many old colonists' gatherings in Christehnrch. He leaves a. widow and seven children—Mr F. G. H. Strong (Christehnrch), Mr A. H. Strong (Hamilton), Mr A. J. Strong (Christchurch 1 ), Mr L. A. Strong (GrcymouttO, Mrs'G. W. Harding (Christchurch), Mr G. V. Strong (Sydney), and Mi&3 F. Strong (Christchurcb).

MR D. W. REED. From Sydney conies tho news of the sudden death, at the age of 62, of Mr David W. Peed, of Waitomo, Latimer road, Pose Bay, Sydney, well known in Christchurcb and South Canterbury in life insurance circles for many years, also in connexion with theiMasonic and Druid Lodges. The late Mr Reed's happy and generous nature made' him hosts of friends all over Canterbury, who will regret to learn of his suddcu and untimely end. He leaves to mourn their loss a widow and a grown-up family of four sons and four daughters—Messrs D., W. Reed (Magistrate, of Grafton, N.S.W.I, Joel Reed (Campsic, Sydney), Frank E. Reed, (Sydney), Fred Eeed (Nelson), Miss Ada Eeed (Sydney), Mrs W. Rench. (Napier), Mrs J. Robinson (Greymoufh), and Mrs A. E. Romeril (Christchurch)— also his aged mother, Mrs J. Eeed, two brothers, Messrs TVII. and J. Reed, and one sister, Mrs Moylc, all of Christchurch.
