The liquor consumption per adult male in New Zealand has fallen during tho past year from two and a half gallons to one and a half, stated Mr A. S. Bankart, at tho annual meeting of shareholders of New • Zealand Breweries, Ltd., this week. This result he attributed to the effect of the in-1 creased liquor duties which had been levied by the Government. "Owing to the immense increases in the duties collected by the Government," he said, '' they have found themselves under the j necessity of reducing their individual consumption of alcoholic liquors by one gallon—equal to 40 per cent, per adult male. The increase in the tariff has had the effect of materially reducing the consumption, but has not increased the revenue as much as was expected by the framers of the tariff. To put the effect of tho tariff in a nutshell, it moans that every person consuming a glass of whisky and soda is thereby contributing 3d to the general revenue of the country, and every consumer of a pint of beer hands over to the Treasury." "I am absolutely disappointed at this appointment?" said Mr KH. Andrews at yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury Education Board, regarding a clerical position which had recently been filled. Mr Andrews said that members of a committee were to have met to consider the matter, but before this had been done" he found that the appointment had been made by the chairman (Mr H. J. Bignell). Mr W. H. Winsor said he had been rung up on the telephone, but was unable to attend the meeting. Mr Andrews said that as this was the case, and as he himself had been away at the time, the matter should have been held over, seeing it was not urgent. Tho chairman said that the Board's secretary (Mr Kirk) had seen and recommended the applicant, and he (Mr Bignell) had approved of him. If anyone was to blame it was he (Mr Bignell). Mr Andrews: Well, I have registered my protest. * You'll find McArthur's "Stop-it" a real friend to keep in the house at this tune of year. A euro and pleasant remedy for winter coughs and colds.
