THE TAXATION COMMISSION.

RECOMMENDATIONS APPROVED. General satisfaction was expressed in Christchurch business circles at the conclusions and recommendations of the Royal Commission on Taxation, according to the views expressed to a representative of "The Press" yester"Needless to sav, we are very pleased indeed with the report of the Commission and consider it a step in the rieht direction," said the secretary of a lar°e manufacturing concern whose works" are in the city area. The recommendation with respect to the taxation of the shareholders of a company instead of the company itself is something that will give the utmost satisfaction. "So far as my company is concerned, we would be particularly pleased to seo the abolition of the land tax which presses heavily upon us .as manufacturers in the city. It would obviously be a very difficult matter for us to move our works and plant to a part of Christchurch where land is less valuable. The abolition of the land tax, therefore, would relieve us of a considerable burden. Those are the most important recommendations of the Commission from our point of view." "I think the Commission lias settled the question in quite a businesslike manner," was the opinion expressed by the ma-nager of a big trading concern. "Somo alteration had to take place to meet the changes that had occurred during the last five years and the Commission has, to my mind, met the position in a way that will please nearly everybody. The result of the recommendations, if they are adopted, will be to the benefit of the whole community. The recommendations are not without anomalies, which is only to be expected in a document of this kind, but amendments can bo made to them, as it is unlikely that the whole of the recommendations will be carried without some alteration being effected." With regard to the suggested abolition of the land-tax, he considered that it was a capital recommendation. The man earning his living on the land had, he said, many difficulties to contend with and any burden carried by binu was felt by the whole community. Consequently, if he was assisted in the direction . indicated, the whole community would benefit also. A number of others who were approached expressed similar views.
